"The New Sad" as written by and Steven/robertson Page....
Everybody knows that happy is the new sad
So I am gonna go and imitate my old dad
And never crack a smile again.

Everybody knows that as we all get older
The will is first to go and so upon my shoulder
The bluebird shall not sing again.

Everybody knows that as our hair gets grayer
We strike a bended pose and say a little prayer
To never feel this way again.

Everybody knows it's never getting better
Everything must go and you will have to let her
And never see her face again.

Everybody's youth is only what they make it
Longer in the tooth, so why do people fake it?
We'll never get it back again.

I know it hurts
No one wants to die.
Goodbye.
Goodbye.

Goodbye.
Goodbye

General CommentI think this song is one of the Barenaked Ladies best songs ever, unless you have a cold heart and a funny bone of steel you'll get a tear in your eye when you hear this. It's about time going by and life's various losses and how it's hard but you need to say goodbye.

General CommentI think this song is about old age, and what comes with it, i.e. grey hair, bent back, ect.

    The verse:
"Everybody's youth is only what they make it
Longer in the tooth, so why do people fake it?
We'll never get it back again."

Is expressing a regret about not living life to the fullest when the narrator was still physically able to. This verse could also be seen as a warning to not waste youth. 'Youth is wasted on the young' sorta thing.

I think mainly that this song is told from the point of view of an elderly person. They are telling us what it is like to be close to death and they are saying "goodbye" in the process.

General CommentI don't know wether I should feel relaxed or get lonely while listening to this song, but surely this is beautifully written.
