"The Flame" as written by and Richard/bowness Barbieri....
Out of all the things
You've ever done
This time I can't go back
When a heart gets broke
This many times
It's easy to lose track
Takin' all this pain
And you know I can't regain
The flame, oh the flame

Like a dreamer needs
Time with you
So unreal, baby
And all our life
Love for me
Is what you feel
Takin' all this pain
And you know I can't regain
The flame, oh the flame

Greater men
Have made it here
Only to turn back
So cut me loose
If you want
Or tighten up the slack
Takin' all this pain
And you know we can't regain
The flame, oh the flame

My InterpretationThis is the last straw. She has hurt him one too many times.

He knows he has to walk away. He HAS to walk away. The pain is too much.

.. but he still dreams about her. She is all he thinks about. The problem is that the relationship is really one sided. He knows she doesn't love him. The only affection in their relationship is from him to her. Still she hurts ... walks away... but eventually goes back to him. Probably because it is a secure relationship. Something that doesn't change. He is always faithful to her, even if she never returns the favor.

The last section is perhaps the most powerful lyrics I have ever read. He knows men with a greater resolve than him have reached this point. The point in which they have to leave someone in order to move on and LIVE. But he also knows so often they can't.

He knows he can't leave her so he asks her to leave him... and if she is unwilling to leave him, then do the only thing left... "tighten up the slack". His love has long become a noose around his neck. She needs him to end it, but he know she won't.

Such an amazing and DEEP song. Great job Black Keys.

    General CommentLost love.
Trying again isn't going to work. The 'flame' is gone.

    Love this song.

General CommentI saw them live in Byron Bay a few months before they released Magic Potion, and they gave us a sneak peek of this song, and I had shivers up and down my neck. Unreal song, to me it's about having your heart broken by someone to the point where you just can't be with that person anymore.

General CommentBoth of you are right, this song is about a lost love after a lot of tryouts. Every time I listen to this song I close my eyes and remember my ex girlfriend (my old flame hehehe) and feel kind of sad since I broke her heart lots of times and every time we tried out,the flame between us was extinguing more and more. I feel as if she was telling those words to me... I'm so sorry for that :,(
