"Broken City" as written by Chris Cornell, Brad Wilk, Tim Commerford and Tom Morello....
My city sleeps by the side of a freeway, the city scraps
And winter time she wore a yellow coat
Now there's nothin' on her back
If a building falls you wouldn't care to notice unless you were in it
Then no one cares about climbin' stairs, nothin' at the top no more

Outside trippin' in the broken city
Outside trippin' in the broken city, I watch a millionaire crack
Outside trippin' in the broken city
Outside kickin' in the broken city, there's nothin' wrong with that

Now the snow falls down like it's fallin' on an ocean
Dead and empty by the railroad tracks where they used to go and come
Now they don't come back
You can heal the rust, goin' up the throughways
Down the alleys where they stole this town from the frontier
I can see 'em tryin' to steal it back

Outside trippin' in the broken city (Outside trippin' in the broken city)
Outside trippin' in the broken city, I watch a millionaire crack
Outside kickin' in the broken city (Outside trippin' in the broken city)
Outside trippin' in the broken city, there's nothin' wrong with that

Now the sun won't shine on this part of the map
Anymore
When it's cold outside I see it hide behind the smokestacks
No thin roses, no goldrush, no miner, no revolution they'd hire
And the shipyard is a graveyard, no one will be trying to find him

Outside trippin' in the broken city (Outside trippin' in the broken city)
Outside kickin' in the broken city, I watch a millionaire crack
Outside trippin' in the broken city (Outside trippin' in the broken city)
Outside kickin' in the broken city, there's nothin' wrong with that
(There's nothin' wrong with that)
(Outside trippin' in the broken city)

General CommentYeah, I definitely see the RATM influence on that funky bass beat (any thoughts of Commerford being a weak bassist were put to rest as I listened to this).

I suck at interpreting lyrics unless someone has sparked an idea for me...so I'll say it's about a city....that is broken. Genius, huh?

General Commenti think he's talking about how people only care about themselves, and everyone around them is "breaking", fallinf apart emotionally, but no one cares..

"If a building falls you wouldn't care to notice unless you were in it "

    that's a great line

General CommentThis entire album's more funky than the previous ones, just as Out Of Exile was funkier than the self-titled. Me likes.

And to me, Cornell just sounds like Cornell, always. I don't like Zack; certainly don't want RATM back. *shudder*

General CommentThe inescapable bass and the title alone suggest an evocative landscape.

General CommentIt's about New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, I believe. I remember reading some of the songs would be about that.

General CommentNo, it's not about NO and Katrina, well it could be...but it's more about Detroit and generally about run down cities (so I guess you could include NO).
    According to CC.

    General CommentMinor correction:

"Outside trippin' in the broken city
Outside trippin' in the broken city, I watch a millionaire crack"

    Should read:

"Outside trippin' in the broken city
Outside trippin' in the broken city, I watch here bleed and crack"

At least, that's what it says in the lyrics that came with the disc and I'm pretty sure that's what Cornell sings (he can be a bit hard to understand sometimes, sounds like he's been yelling for an hour before singing).
