"A Wishing Well" as written by Matthew Robert Bruso, Brendan Alexander Macdonald and Mark Edward Castillo....
You faced a tragedy
You changed the course of me
I have the right to speak
But you took that right away
When you took you away

I know the choice wasn’t easy
But I don’t know what it took to choose
And I know that you’ll never believe me
But I know that I would have chosen you
Was he ever deserving
Of the finger(?) that we lived without
Did his choice turn out to be ugly
Or are you living with hollow doubts

Until this day, I wonder what your thinking
And I still wonder, where did you go
I still don’t know how you can’t believe
What doors behind you bind you aloud (?)

With one another but without you
Mental bliss(?)
That’s all we come to

I hold nothing against you
I feel we deserved a chance
There's so many questions I want to ask
So many holes to fill in our past

    You faced a tragedy
You changed the course of me
I had the right to speak
But you took that right away
    When you took you away

I know the choice wasn't easy
But I don't know what it took to choose
And I know that you'll never believe me
But I know that we would have chosen you

    Was he ever deserving
Of the figure that we lived without
Did he just turn out to be ugly
Or were you living with all your doubts

    And to this day
I wonder what you were thinking
And I still wonder where did you go
    I still don't know
How you came to leave us that day
Left us behind you but not alone

With one another but without you
Make the best that's all we can do

    I hold nothing against you
I just feel we deserved a chance
There's so many questions I want to ask
So many holes to fill in our past

General CommentThe lyrics in this song involve a choice that was made by the vocalist, Matt’s mother. This was a choice that was made without his approval but has had a major influence on his life. His mother made the decision to leave Matt and his younger sister at a reasonably early age. Years later, Matt still can’t get over this tragedy in his life. The bands lyrics are riddled with words about his childhood and Mother.

Throughout the song, Matt repeats the words “I know” and “I don’t know”. The techniques used are contrast and repetition. This sends a message to us that he is confused. He faces confusion about why his mother left him, what he did wrong and constantly wonders what she is and was thinking. He wants to talk to his mother and lets that be known with the sentence “There’s so many questions I want to ask”. There is a strong repetition of the word “you”, this suggests that Matt believes that his Mother only cared about herself and only did what she thought was right for herself.

Matt also sends a message of forgiveness with the sentence “I hold nothing against you”. Yet at other times he seems mad and hurt with the lines “I had the right to speak, but you took that right away” and “I just feel we deserved a chance”. This shows that he is not quite ready to condemn his mother for her choice but is still very indignant of her preference.
