cheer up lady
I’m really into it
candor leaves us far behind
Let’s see how twisted we can be

soak up pleasantries
of mildew and stitchery
the needlepoint has set designs
to show how easy it can be when we

waste it on
we waste it on
we waste it on

let’s start making
maps out of all the dead skin
that maybe causing false alarms
it might be peeling much too quickly

clean up with me
the homemade surgeries
my veneers sink into you
and show how twisted we can be when we

waste it on
we waste it on
we waste it on

on sullen meadows that will fit right in
with lisping rivers that will fit right in
with mountain ranges through matted lenses
that will fit right in connect and dissect so we

with all your meadows they’ll still see right in
with all your rivers they’ll still see right in
no mountain ranges will stop them sensing
and they’ll see right in and see right through cuz we

waste it on
we waste it on
we waste it on
we waste it on

    choosing veneers over candor...

seems like this song is about superficiality, and how these people are content with not revealing their true selves at the time.

maybe it's about two people who are getting romantically involved and kind of playing each other, and they are self-creating a false paradise. maybe it's not about that at all?

imo, about plastic surgery, and wasting money on trying to improve your image.

"Clean up with me" Think about it. About drug addiction and a relationship in which both people are addicted and the desire to break free of the vicious cycle.

The second comment about plastic surgery could fit. The singer/songwriter Brian had 3 surgical procedures when he was a kid, trying to 'fix' his lazy eye (which he still has).

emilimo701 was definitely on the right track with this.

Throughout the song he talks about how they're pretending to be something they're not. How they're forcing themselves to be like the other while never showing anything of their true selves.

Not only are they trying to falsely convince themselves that they belong together. They're trying to convince others that they aren't pretending. It's ironic and strange because he's expressing that they both already know that they're pretending to like each other... and so their primary goal has become to convince everyone else.

"cheer up lady I'm really into it candor leaves us far behind Let's see how twisted we can be"

He says that being open is wrong and will leave you far behind... being honest is wrong. The recurring theme of "Let's see how twisted we can be" is him telling her that they should try to be as convincing as possible to those around them.

"soak up pleasantries of mildew and stitchery the needlepoint has set designs to show how easy it can be when we"

They're still pretending. Delving into the normalities of everyday life and typical relationships.

"let's start making maps out of all the dead skin that maybe causing false alarms it might be peeling much too quickly"

The dead skin is a metaphor for a sudden abnormality that they're trying to cover up. Making a map out of it to make it look normal. If it peels too quickly and they can't cover it, they'll be exposed.

"clean up with me the homemade surgeries my veneers sink into you and show how twisted we can be when we"

Homemade surgeries are the attempts that they're making to hide the truth about their relationship. Veneers are another symbol of false representation.

"on sullen meadows that will fit right in with lisping rivers that will fit right in with mountain ranges through matted lenses that will fit right in connect and dissect so we"

Talking about how well their image fits. How perfectly they've covered everything up. They can successfully waste their relationship and their lives without anyone ever knowing.

"with all your meadows they'll still see right in with all your rivers they'll still see right in no mountain ranges will stop them sensing and they'll see right in and see right through because we

waste it on we waste it on we waste it on we waste it on"

No matter what they do. No matter how perfectly or concise they are, they can't hide the truth. They're wasting their lives away by not being open and honest.

Give this song whatever application you like. The indisputable fact is that they're trying to hide something from someone... And the act of them doing so is useless... a waste.
