In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.

It seems this song has been covered well but I'd like to emphasize some lines that stand out to me and essentially describe the meaning of the song which is kind of obvious to me anyway.
Every Step you take is to the end -The future of science doesn't bode well for humanity
Mother Nature so far away : Why? -Duplicating life is unnatural, why not let nature work the way it was intended? Goes well with the first line. Science vs Nature
Perfect is the race you dream -Seems to me if clones of ourselves were all wandering around, it's the perfect world right? Never die completely;immortal. I'm being sarcastic of course
Perfection you fake is not -The perfect world some strive for by messing with the natural order of life isn't perfect at all; it's an abomination
The soul, not a genetic code -If we do in fact possess a soul, which many believe we do, what happens to it when something is cloned? It can't be replicated like a genetic code.
Hatchery, the newborn to celebrate -Natural birth is worth celebrating
Ashes to ashes, I see respect in the dust -Ashes to ashes, the circle of life. Death is a natural part of the circle of life(oroborous) and worth respecting for we all will face it. We should anyway, that's what the song is about(in my opinion), Nature vs A Perfect World(created by science)
Life is so perfect -Goes hand in hand with the two prior lines. The circle of life is perfect the way it is.
Now for the weak an abortion -Self explanatory and I wouldn't want to spark a debate not that many people comment here(on Gojira anyway) but what other creature on this planet uses a clothes hanger to rip a fetus from the womb or goes to a hospital for a less crude way of abortion. Most often then not, it's done because it wasn't planned or they were scared(weak). I suppose it's their choice but it isn't natural obviously and it proves human-kind is weak not to embrace the life that grows. Not stating Gojira is pro life or pro abortion as I don't want to speak for them, but this is the only way I can interpret this line.
Celebrate perfection that grows -Self explanatory, going hand in hand with the prior line. Abortion is for the weak and unnatural; celebrate life. My interpretation anyway.
The flesh, a gift of science The soul a fault of a god -These two lines seem to express the confusion of cloning or replicating life by scientific means. What happens to the soul? Do we even possess one? Will a clone just be human robot? Many more questions could be asked. Again, just my interpretation.
The last 9 lines seem to contemplate the future of life. I won't go over each line, but the most important are the last two in my opinion that sum it up.
Mother Nature is at saturation point And the cradle is falling down -We destroy the earth and insult mother nature with many things we do as humans. Eventually, the cradle(or the many) that mother nature supports us with and provides for us will break and we'll ultimately feel her wrath. How much more can she tolerate?
So to sum up, Nature Vs Unnatural Life( and the song does well criticizing it)
