Hi-Fi fellas and Lo-fi chicks
Hair is how we take you there.
Bones is how we make it now.
Now I'm after a walking disaster.

We live life we live it large,
In control taking charge.
You are soft and we are hard.
You don't desire to step to our fire. (x2)

You're gonna know if you keep on asking questions
You're gonna know real soon
You say, "Hey, I never fall,"
As you're falling down.
Your blood is all around you now,
But you see nothing at all.
You say hey, get against the wall
Yeah, you get against the wall

It's just the way the city smells.
It's just the way the rain falls now.
We be the rhythm that calm you down
We be the rhythm that calm you down

It's just the way you talk so loud
It's just the way the bones fall down
We be the rhythm that calm you down
We be the rhythm that calm you down

We love you in glacial ways
We love you in glacial ways
We love you in glacial ways
We love you in glacial ways
We love you in glacial ways
We love you in glacial ways

Yeah, you're gonna know, if you keep on asking questions
You're gonna know real soon
You say, "Hey, I never fall,"
As you're falling down.
Your blood is all around you now,
But you see nothing at all
You say hey, get against the wall
Yeah, you get against the wall

Song MeaningThe video is very revealing about this song's meaning: youtube.com/…

I think the interpretations of it being about questioning authority are way off. In my view, this song is a brilliantly dark commentary on the habits of over consumption and its cumulative effects on the body. It highlights the ever present sense of naive, immortal 'do anything' youth that many of us go through at one time or another early in our lives.

"You're gonna know if you keep on asking questions!" What questions? The questions you ask your body every time you light up another cigarette, have another beer, eat more than you should, exercise less than you should, etc. You're asking yourself questions... is this going to be the smoke that gives me lung cancer? Can I take another shot? What is this stuff doing to my body in the long run? Well, you're gunna know real soon.

I don't know if it's "ritalin" or "rhythm", I hear both when I listen and it's not exactly clear, but either way gets the point across.

"WE LOVE YOU IN GLACIAL WAYS". This is my favorite part. When something is glacial it's slow and progressive; but certainly on a different timescale than the human mind is accustomed to focusing its attention on. Think of time lapsed photography, plants growing, glaciers moving, but more importantly... lungs getting blacker, sicker.. liver deteriorating.. ris for heart attack gradually increasing. Death by a thousand tiny cuts.

I believe it's the substances that are actually saying that line. It's an eerie bit of irony, coming from them. They 'love' you in glacial ways, little by little over a long time. And we keep loving them back, because we can't quit them. We keep asking ourselves those questions, but then shrug our shoulders, shake our heads, and say "Just one more won't hurt."

This song is brutal self-honesty at its cruelest.

General CommentI see the message of this song as keep on asking questions.
MGMT wants their listeners to question authority to question as much as they can. As they once said, they want to "scare the squares" What will you learn after endless questioning? That you don't know much, but you probably know more than most people. It's that socratic irony. all i know is that i don't know.

I think if you ask enough questions you realize a great sadness about life. You appreciate the complexity a lot more, but you realize that no one has a fuckin' clue why we're here or how to live the good life.

One of the most controversial issues is drugs. It's taboo, and people shy away from the issue. I think MGMT would admit to experimenting and tell you drugs can be good and bad depending on how they're looked at or how their used..
People may wonder why they use certain drugs or why they act so strange. If you keep on asking questions, you'll know why they act the way they do. They're just having fun and being pranksters

I don't think it's regret about drug use. I think it's just admitting that drugs and partying are a confusing part of people's lives. It can be great memorable fun, and it can also send you down the drain.

I think the "we love you in glacial ways." is like saying we love you in cold distant ways. Maybe it's a shout-out to all of their listeners, who they love and feel connected to without actually seeing them.
Or it's just people in their lives that they come in contact with but are not really close to. We can be come off as cold towards people but still love them deep down.

General CommentWhat if it's "rhythm" instead of "ritalin", i.e., "we'll be the rhythm to calm you down"?

General Comment@sqr7447: I think glacial ways would mean that it's an extremely slow progression, rather than cold and distant. When something is happening very slowly and deliberately, it's frequently described as moving at a glacial pace.

General CommentI feel that everyone here was right about the meaning. To me it's kind of like when he says "hey i never fall, as you're falling down" he's saying, we might do things that are considered bad, but we all end up in the same place, so no matter how you live your life, we all perish eventually.

    Great Song
