Emily will find a better place to fall asleep
She belongs to fairy tales that I could never be
The future haunts with memories that I will never have
And hope Is just a stranger wandering how it’s got so bad

I die each time you look away
My heart, my life will never be the same
This love will take my everything
One breath, one touch will be the end of me

You could be the final straw that brings me back to earth
Ever-waiting airports full of the love that you deserve
Wishing I could find a way to wash away the past
Knowing that my heart will break, but at least the pain will last

I die each time you look away
My heart, my life will never be the same
This love will take my everything
One breath, one touch will be the end of me

Emily will find a better place to fall asleep
Maybe she will save me in the oceans of her dream
And maybe someday love
Maybe someday love

I absolutely love this song! Trading Yesterday, is one of the most underrated bands out there. To me this song is about someone who screwed up and is now reaping the punishment of their actions. He realizes now that he screwed up, but it's too late because she's moved on.

Song MeaningThis is what I think this song is about:

Emily will find a better place to fall asleep
(Emily will find a better person to be with, instead of him)
She belongs to fairy tales that I could never be
(She, in her own fate will have a better love life than him)
The future haunts with memories that I will never have
(He has thought about being with her, and what will happen to both of them in the future if they were together. But he knows that he can't have it because he's not with her anymore)
And hope is just a stranger, wondering how it got so bad
(Sometimes you hope for something to happen, and you also look forward for it to happen. But sometimes, it never turns out the way you wanted it to be)

I die each time you look away
(Well I think that this might have 2 meanings to it, but I'm not sure. The 1st meaning I think it means that she never looks at him anymore. The 2nd meaning I think it means that she never looks back in the past, when both of them used to be together)
My heart, my life will never be the same
(Without her, his heart and life will never be as it used to be like)
This love will take my everything
(He would do anything for this love)
One breath, one touch will be the end of me
(When she goes away, he'll loose his hope of love)

You could be the final straw that brings me back to earth
(She can be the only person who he'll ever love)
Ever-waiting airports full of the love that you deserve
(He'll wait for her no matter what)
Wishing I could find a way to wash away the past
(He wishes that he can erase all the memories he had with her)
Knowing that my heart will break, but at least the pain will last
(He knows that his heart will break, but at least he's still having the same pain as before)

Emily will find a better place to fall asleep
(As before, she will find a better person to be with, instead of him)
Maybe she will save me in the oceans of her dream
(Maybe she'll come back to him, one day)
    And maybe someday love
(And maybe she'll start loving him again)
    Maybe someday love
    (Maybe she will...)

General CommentBit by bit, this is my interpretation of the song:

"Emily will find a better place to fall asleep
She belongs to fairy tales that I could never be
The future haunts with memories that I could never have
And hope Is just a stranger wondering how it’s got so bad"

The first line is self self-explanatory. The second, I think he's saying that Emily has a rosy pink view of things, that he just might be too jaded to fall in line with. Her beautiful view of love and romance is something he can't ever see himself being able to give her (line three). In line four he's talking about that hope we all start out with, but lifes turns takes away from us, and we're left wondering where it all went so wrong.

"I die each time you look away
My heart, my life will never be the same
This love will take my everything
One breath, one touch will be the end of me"

He knows that Emily will fond someone to offer her what he has been unable too. His heart, his life will ever be the same because he'll know in losing her he's losing the best thing he could ever have. WHen she leaves him, she'll take away his last hope at love.

"You could be the final straw that brings me back to earth
Ever-waiting airports full of the love that you deserve
Wishing I could find a way to wash away the past
Knowing that my heart will break, but at least the pain will last"

He's hoping that she can tear him away from his fears so he can give her what he knows so many others are willing to and can offer. He wishes he could get past whatever it is that's tied him in his fear, and though her leaving will break his heart, at least he'll just be left in the pain he's already used to.

    (chorus again)

"Emily will find a better place to fall asleep
Maybe she will save me in the oceans of her dream
    And maybe someday love
    Maybe someday love"

Again, he knows she'll find someone better for her, but he's hoping that her rosy view of things can somehow envelope him, draw him in enough that someday, just maybe, he'll be able to be the man he so wants and deserves.

    General CommentI honestly think that "Emily" is dead and the man singing is grieving over her. A requiem is a song to honor a dead person. And the first line only confirms it for me, too. I'm sure that "A better place to sleep" is a reference to Heaven. And in the chorus, he says how he can't stand being without her and how her death is killing him inside. This song brings tears to my eyes. );

General CommentThis song is basically about unrequited love. The singer loves Emily but she probably has a boyfriend.

"Emily will find a better place to fall asleep" = She's with her boyfriend, who she assumes is better for her than the singer. The fairytales are the life that she has with her boyfriend. The future memories are the experiences she'll have with her boyfriend and not the singer. The singer hopes for a life with Emily and wonders why he doesn't have her in the same way.

"I die each time you look away" = Emily doesn't look at him the way he looks at her. She only has eyes for her boyfriend, not for the singer. The chorus is about how this situation is ripping his heart out.

The second verse is how the singer believes he's a better match for Emily.

"Maybe she will save me in the oceans of her dream" = Emily obviously cares for the singer too. She has pondered being with the singer, because she dreams about him. The singer hopes that she will seek out the part of her brain that he is hidden in and run with it. Basically by deciding to be with him, she is rescuing that part of her brain that is saying "be with singer, and not my boyfriend".

The singer hopes that Emily will "maybe someday love" him.

Beautiful song. I wish I wasn't in a situation to relate to it.

General CommentThis song is so haunting... it took me a day and someone else's word to figure out why it weirded/freaked me out so much.

A requiem is a song meant to honour a dead person (I looked it up on dictionary.com), so this song has to be about someone that is dead and he's grieving.

Or, if you want to look symbolically, the meaning of the word requiem could be used in a way that's singing about how she's dead to him. Like, she screwed up and left or something and he's singing about how she made a mistake and how he misses how she was and now she's dead to him? Doesn't seem as likely though...

General CommentI think this song is more about a boy in love with a girl who simply doesn't love him back. I actually think they were probably good friends-hence wash away the past. From the chorus I gather that everytime they're together it's emotional killing him because she doesn't feel the same way and it's taking all his effort not to just pour out his heart to her (This love will take my everything-perhaps all his restraint?).
I don't think she's literally dead. I feel like she's more "dead" to his love from the part that says "Maybe someday love" suggesting there is hope that one day she will love him back.

General CommentI thought this song was about loving someone you could be with because you don't think you're good enough to have them.

General Comment"Requiem" is a big give away: he's wishing that he could've fixed things before she died. ("memories that I will never have")

Perhaps it is metaphorical, but I think it would be a much stronger meaning if it were literal.

"Maybe someday love" - I think is him hoping she'll find God's love in heaven (so shoot me, I believe in God). Maybe because he felt that no mortal love is good enough for her?

I could pick apart the whole song, but basically, I love it. With all my heart.

General CommentI think this song is about how he loves this girl (Emily) and would do anything for her but, she always has a positive view on things where he has a negative view on things. He doesn't think he is the right person for her. He loves her but feels like she needs someone who he can never be.

"I die each time you look away" to me this means, everytime she's with others he feels as if she may stop loving him and fall in love with some else.

"Maybe she can save me in the oceans of her dreams" he's hoping maybe he can change for her sake and make her happy and be the man of her dreams (everything she's ever wanted)

"Emily will find a better place to fall asleep" he thinks she could find someone better then him. "She belongs to fairytales that I can never be" he doesn't think he is good enough for her and thinks it'd be better if she was with someone other then him.

That's my opinion! I love this song!
