Back in the day, in our sleep little town
Out of nowhere, a hippie band came around
They set up camp (down by the river)
Close to SoSo curve (behind the levee)
Folks said stay away (them people are dirty)
Tell Deputy Momio, get down there in a hurry

He said they got them hippie girls
Taking off all their clothes
They're swimming in the river
Painting beads, making rainbows, and singing

Love is a beautiful thing
I can't wait to see what the new day brings
Love is a beautiful thing
Make you wanna dance, make you wanna holler

I remember
Supper time conversation, opinions flew
I ain't sure about my daddy
I think he kinda liked the view

Brother said they ain't hurting nobody
(ain't hurting nobody)
Leave the Mud People alone
Momio said they ain't broken no laws
and I kinda like to hear that song

The was patcouli incense
And weedsmoke in the air
It was all colors, it was all love
And it was allright
Me and my brother stayed right there
Singing all through the night

Make you wanna dance, and cry, and
laugh, and sing
Nananana...make you wanna holler
Nananana...down by the river
Nananana...behind the levee

General CommentAnyone who loves New Orleans should listen to the Subdudes. This song has such a great sound--you just want to sing along and start dancing when you hear it.

MemoryI just happened to google Papa Duke and the Mud People on the off-chance there would be others who remembered them. I remember meeting Papa Duke with my then significant other when he and his old lady lived on Esplanade. Buck was the base player for Papa Duke. So long ago.
