Start with colors
They always get away with attitude
But they'll try to convince you of your mood
And what you want they'll give it to you
But it's only therapy, that's all they do

And for a year
She was anti-pioneer
Singing sappy songs
About what went wrong

Two years before
But even now
When the false is true
When I call me you

When the flag changes colors
The language knows
When the month changes numbers
It's time to go

When the flag changes colors
The language knows
When the month changes numbers
It's time to go

Anti-pioneer
Anti-pioneer
Anti-pioneer
Anti-pioneer

And for a year
She was anti-pioneer

They passed her off too late
To change her future's fate
But even now when the false gets true
And living colors seem possible to you

When the flag changes colors
The language knows
When the month changes numbers
It's time to go

When the flag changes colors
The language knows
When the month changes numbers
It's time to go home

album version 2011! (just titled "anti-pioneer" on the record)

start with colours they always get away with attitude but they'll try to convince you of your mood and what you want they'll give it to you but it's only therapy, that's all they do

and for a year she was anti-pioneer singing sappy songs about what went wrong two years before, but even now when the false is true when i call me you

when the flag changes colours the language knows when the month changes numbers it's time to go when the flag changes colours the language knows when the month changes numbers it's time to go

    anti-pioneer then anti-pioneer then anti-pioneer then anti-pioneer then

and for a year she was anti-pioneer they passed her off too late to change her future's fate but even now when the false gets true and living colours seem possible to you

when the flag changes colours the language knows when the month changes numbers it's time to go

when the flag changes colours the language knows when the month changes numbers it's time to go home

    My Interpretation

A very depressed woman who gave up. Pioneers are creators, explorers. She gave up on moving foward and just stayed stagnant.

the version I listened had some extra lines:

for a year she's anti-pioneer. singing saddest songs about what went wrong. two years ago and even now there's a false with true that I call gone near you (not sure)

    all I do ohh...

Thank Feist for recording this...The string section made the song much more emotional...I love it! But i felt a lack of the guitar,it was more proeminent on the early versions...

lol I wish more people had a go at the song meaning instead of just telling us they love it! Anyway. I am really not sure what this one is about, seems maybe a woman who is in therapy after a break up?

Flags represent countries and to change the color of a flag would mean another country has conqured and divided, perhaps through war via storming borders and such. Usually, along border towns where there are two different languages, each contribues to the other to form a "hybrid" language, or mix of both. When a nation is conqured, the language may change. That is historical, at least and is much of the conqurers strategy; to deny the people of their religion (Julian/Gregorian calander?) and rid them of their native tongue.

Therapy could be thought to mean a rahabilitation as in the "colors" that represent the nation are symbols that represent the nations voice and how the voice (leader) will often promise the people prosperity ect which are absolute lies, only inteded to change the "mood" of the people.

The anti-pioneer would be someone who cares not to participate in storming borders and are more like an isolationist country. On second thought, it could also mean the people are not willing to pioneer into new territory though they are being stormed. Interesting song!

    My Interpretation

It's the seeming inevitability of relationships: the ebb and flow, and finally the eclipse. It's the narrator speaking about intuition, those feelings that are associated with the recognition that there are seasons in life and the changing of the seasons are difficult, but inevitable.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
