This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
And you said it would be funny
To keep me hanging in suspense,
Then I'd run over to your house
And I'd scale the chain link fence
That, borders your back yard
And that I'd climb through your window
And I'd whisper that I love you
As you fall out of your clothes
And we'd lay there in the darkness
Like the dream of you I had
Where we captured all the fireflies
And we knew what time we had
Could be counted on our finger tips
That almost made you cry
You let me hold you tightly
As we said all our goodbyes
May I say I loved you more?
May I say I loved you more?
And it must have been an hour
That I clutched you in my arms
And I must have said the the right things
Because you instantly felt warm
And you heard my heart stop beating
And you wanted not to cry
As your sympathetic whispers
They told a tale of bad goodbyes
And you swore you say me laughing
And I swore I saw you smile
And this time we spent together
Has got to last us quite awhile
As I take this piece of you with me
I'll carry it to my grave
Knowing that for someone
You're an angel sent to save
May I say I loved you more?
May I say I loved you more?
(Keep breathing my angel,
If you go down I go down with you
Keep breathing, just keep breathing)
Let's drink to the memories that we shared
Down one to all the hopes and cares
Here's to for being unaware, that you're gone
Because before too long you'll be a memory
Let's drink to the memories that we shared
(Before too long you'll be a memory)
Down one to all the hopes and cares
(Because before too long you'll be a memory)
Here's to for being unaware
(I said before too long you'll be a memory)
That you're gone
I said before too long you'll be a memory
To keep me hanging in suspense,
Then I'd run over to your house
And I'd scale the chain link fence
That, borders your back yard
And that I'd climb through your window
And I'd whisper that I love you

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
this song is so beautiful. holyshit.
ok, this is just my take on it cause when i apply a recent relatioship to this it makes sense
i think the song is talking about a couple that really loved each other, but somethign happened, maybe rust was lost or something, idk... but they had to break up and neither of them wanted to...they just knew they had to.... so theyre kind of like, spending their last night together... and like, having a happy tiem ONE last time before its all over, and hes saying that hes upset but he knows he has to go....and hes saying that he knows that shes going to be someone esles true love someday.....but hes still mad at her for having to do it... and hes trying to forget about it... probably gettin drunk, as he thinks about the last happy memory they had
actually the song is about a loved one dying,
not about them breaking up.
she died in a car crash, if you guys actually
read the lyrics and what they're saying, you'll realize
that.
they aren't completely accurate to what happened,
but it's about one of their girlfriends dying.
One Man Drinking Games? This song;amazing; it has true deep meanings.
I think...
The boy sneaks to the girls house to have sex and spend time together because they know its going to be the last and they want it to be the best. The boy gets drunk because the girl is going to die and he doesn't want it to be real? (Keep breathing, my angel, if you go down I go down with you. & Before too long you'll be a memory. ) Not positive about that but thats just my thoughts. They really and truly loved eachother. Their time together was treasured and it had to last the boy awhile.
hahaha i laughed so hard when you said ahem thought i would tell you, and i agree with what you said
you guys are all looking at the song as if its happening as he writes it..but everything he does is in pass-tense
personally, i think him and his girlfriend just broke up (obviously) but its not their last night together hes writing about..he's reminiscing on the nights he spent with her..and what she put him through, "keep me hanging in suspence". so he remembers what he would do just to see her and be with her for the time he could. but hes coming to the fact that shes just a memory and as his thinking of her and drinking away the memorys.. he hopes shes doing the same
and i honestly, i relate to this song 100% so thats where i get my views from =/
I agree with you i think they mean that the memory is dyeing
It's actually about the drummers girlfriend who was killed because some asshole decided to drink and drive.
They have talked about this before, im surprised since so many of you guys claim to be die hard mayday fans that none of you know the true answer. They even have a few video's on youtube explaining it.
First its fictional, it is not about any of the band members, as they have said over and over almost all their songs are fictional they just express the emotions given in this fictional event.
Second I would like to add that the song is amazingly beautiful and for all those that stated this was a song about the last time 2 people got to have sex should just be hit by a truck you never actually must have listened to the song.
The true meaning is about feelings expressed for a love one that died in a car accident and that boyfriend/girlfriend being there to hold the person as they pass the the feeling shared in that moment. If you actually listen to the song its spot on. Nothing more, nothing less. Its about having to say goodbye when it wasn't supposed to be done.
The huge rumor that did circulate was that Jake Bundrick ( he is the drummer since most of you obviously aren't mayday fans and just trolling ) wrote this song due to a long time highschool girlfriend died in a drunk driving accident and this was a tribute, if that is true or not will never be known as the band has stated multiple times its a fictional song.
Now for the trolling people that want to argue this u can fine it on youtube, specifically I remember an interview with Alex Garcia ( again he is the lead guitar ) talking about this.
Sorry if I sound angry only because this song has done alot for alot of people that have had this happen to them and half these responses were unbelievably insulting, you all have your own opinions sure but use so kind of god damn logic.
Dude, relax!!! If you get this worked up over something as trivial as people misinterpreting song lyrics, i'd hate to see how stressed you get over really important things. First off, being a fan of a band or a song doesn't mean knowing every tiny thing about that band or song. I love Mayday Parade, and this song especially, but I don't even know the names of any of the band. Why not? Coz i've got bigger shit in my life to worry about!!! And as for not knowing the true meaning behind the song, well so what. I actually think that your version (as true as it probably is - and you're right, it DOES work with the lyrics) is a tad morbid. I prefer my own interpretation of a bf and gf separating coz one's leaving town. Maybe not true, but still fitting with the song and a whole lot less miserable.
Anyway, peace, bud. It's an awesome song either way and should be a whole lot better known.
@horan116 Love, I understand your frustration, obviously you're passionate about the band and what they make, what they give us. But the point of music is sharing and, this is just an opinion on the matter, maybe the artists don't always tell us the true meanings of their songs because it's meant for us to find our own meaning as well as what they intended.
In every form of expression, there's intention and interpretation. Both are equally welcome and that's the point. Sure they had their own ideas, intentions, for their songs, but it's just as much about giving the world something to work with as giving them something that's already been made sense of and laid out. For me, I relate because, while my ex didn't die in a car crash, he did die but I wasn't fortunate enough to be able to hold him. He was travelling abroad while I was in school when he died of an illness that we couldn't save him from. It broke my heart and I had my first drink crying on my best friend's sofa.

It is an amazingly powerful song full of love and nostalgia. Keep that love in mind when you respond to people who are just trying to relate it to something they understand as the full circumstances aren't always spelled out, which is the beauty of music- you don't need every little detail to feel it all.
This is an amazing song. I think that this song means something different to everyone who hears it. To me this song is about a teen couple, and the girls dying, because they knew what time they had left together. And when she dies hes going to in a sense die with her.
i think its about a dude and his g/f is dying
And I thought it would be funny to leave you hanging in suspense Then I'd run over to your house and I'd scale the chainlink fence That borders your back yard and then I'd climb through your window And I'd whisper that I love you as you fall out of your clothes And we'd lay there in the darkness like this dream of you I had Where we captured all the fireflies and knew what time we had Could be counted on our fingertips and that almost made you cry But you let me hold you tightly as we said all our goodbyes May I say I loved you more And it must of been and hour that I clutched you in my arms And I must have said the right things because you instantly felt warm And you heard my heart stop beating but you watned not to cry As your sympathetic whispers told a tale of bad goodbyes You swore you heard me laughing and I swore I saw you smile AS the time we've spent together was meant to last us quite a while As I take this piece of you with me I'll carry to my grave And knowing that for someone you're an angel sent to save (Keep Breathing my angel, if you go down I go with you) May I saw I loved you more So let's drink to memories we shared Down one for all the hopes and cares Here's too for being unaware that you're gone Because before too long you'll be a memory
I think she moved, and they lost contact. Then he tries to regain it and finds out she's died.
"And you said it would be funny to keep me hanging in suspense, then I'd run over to your house and I'd scale the chain link fence that, borders your back yard and that I'd climb through your window and I'd whisper that I love you as you fall out of your clothes."
He's remembering how it was BEFORE she moved.
"And we'd lay there in the darkness like the dream of you I had where we captured all the fireflies and we knew what time we had could be counted on our finger tips that almost made you cry you let me hold you tightly as we said all our goodbyes."
What's happening as she's telling him she has to move far away, and their reaction.
"may I say I loved you more may I say I loved you more"
Their only words, that they want to make sure the other knows how much they care about them.
"and It must have been an hour that I clutched you in my arms and I must of said the the right things because you instantly felt warm"
He's trying to make her feel better, and reassure her they'll still be together if they can.
"and you heard my heart stop beating and you wanted not to cry as your sympathetic whispers they told a tale of bad goodbyes"
His 'heart stopped' as in it broke. He knows that by telling her they'll be together he's lying and she knows it, but they're hoping that by believing it, it'll be true.
"and you swore you say me laughing and I swore I saw you smile and this time we spent together has got to last us quite awhile"
Their last moments have got to last them quite a while, so they'll be happy even apart. And after she moves, it has tp last forever, as she dies.
"as I take this piece of you with me I'll carry it to my grave knowing that for someone you're an angel sent to save (Keep breathing my angel, if you go down I go down with you) may I say I loved you more (keep breathing, just keep breathing) may I say I loved you more"
He finds out shes died, and he keeps saying he loves her because he believe she can hear him, as shes an angel now. And that he'll be with her soon.
lets drink to the memorys that we shared down one to all the hopes and cares heres too for being unaware, that your gone because before too long you'll be a memory
lets drink to the memories that we shared (before too long you'll be a memory) down one to all the hopes and cares (because before too long you'll be a memory) heres too for being unaware (I said before too long you'll be a memory) that your gone I said before too long you'll be a memory"
he's getting wasted because of guilt.
I totally agree but I think he's trying to get drunk to forget about her. Because he's hurting just by thinking about her. Thus the "Here's too for being unaware that you're gone... Because before too long, you'll be a memory."
Of course everyone interperts things according to what relates to them. I was in a long distance relationship and then she left, so this is basically how I relate to it. Even though in actuality she may have died, I don't choose to see it like that.
And you said it would be funny to keep me hanging in suspense,
-- The girl is leaving him in suspence, by the fact that he's worried because he really loves her and he knows that she really loves him but he's so afraid of her leaving, but he knows she's going to eventually.
then I'd run over to your house and I'd scale the chain link fence that, borders your back yard and that I'd climb through your window and I'd whisper that I love you as you fall out of your clothes
-- This is the boy reminicing about how he used to have to go through so many obstacles just to try to see her. i.e. "Scale the chain link fence" and "Climb through your window" Those aren't easy things to do. But once he gets to her, they can spend that night together and be happy. This is all in past tense by the way, and these are just his memories with her.
And we'd lay there in the darkness like the dream of you I had where we captured all the fireflies and we knew what time we had could be counted on our finger tips that almost made you cry you let me hold you tightly as we said all our goodbyes
-- He's talking about laying with her, either while she's asleep or not, but he's thinking about the dreams he's had of her. But he also knows that they both don't have a lot of time together and it's keeping him awake. Since he could count the time on his fingers, he knew that there wasn't a lot of time left for them, and he held her because they were going to leave eachother soon. Still talking about the memory.
may I say I loved you more may I say I loved you more
-- They probably did the whole "I love you" "I love you more" Thing. So eventually when she left he's saying 'I guess I did love you more' or he's just playing on the fact that that's what they used to do.
and It must have been an hour that I clutched you in my arms and I must of said the the right things because you instantly felt warm and you heard my heart stop beating and you wanted not to cry as your sympathetic whispers they told a tale of bad goodbyes
-- So he's talking about anything with her, when they were running out of time, Note how he specificly puts the time in, because it's an important thing to them. They were just talking before he had to leave. They're talking to eachother and when 'his heart stopped beating' it was him starting to get really sad as they're saying goodbye. And they're both sorry that he has to leave.
and you swore you say me laughing and I swore I saw you smile and this time we spent together has gone to last us quite awhile as I take this piece of you with me I'll carry it to my grave knowing that for someone you're an angel sent to save
-- Now he's alone reminicing in the present talking about how he swore that they were happy together regardless of the distance. And the time they had together lasted them a long time, but now it's over for whatever reason, but he'll take whatever she gave him i.e. Memories, a physical item, or whatever and he'll have them until he dies. But he knows that she's 'an angel sent to save' so that's what he tells himself to help the pain of her not being able to see her anymore.
(Keep breathing my angel, if you go down I go down with you)
-- Even though they're not together anymore, he's just wants her to keep going, and trying to be happy but if she's going down, he's going down too. Self explanatory.
may I say I loved you more (keep breathing, just keep breathing) may I say I loved you more
--
lets drink to the memorys that we shared down one to all the hopes and cares heres too for being unaware, that your gone because before too long you'll be a memory
-- They're both starting to drink to all their memories and time they spent on eachother and he's still trying to understand that she's gone, and he's worried that all she'll ever be again is just a memory. /Before Too Long/ = She'll be a memory way before she was actually supposed to be one.
lets drink to the memories that we shared (before too long you'll be a memory) down one to all the hopes and cares (because before too long you'll be a memory) heres too for being unaware (I said before too long you'll be a memory) that your gone I said before too long you'll be a memory
