"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" as written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin....
They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh, I, of course, replied
Something here inside
Cannot be denied

They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them, and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt our love
Yet today, my love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say:
"when a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes,"

General CommentI believe this is a Billie Holiday tune. Although I'm not a big fan of Holiday's voice, she was definitely a great in her genre. This is a song about love lost...and feeling blue. I still can't get the image of Eartha in her costume out of my mind. She was indeed special being that she was a black woman on a hit TV series aimed at children. I always admired her for that. Those were different times and some tough attitudes prevailed.
