"Can't Break Her Fall" as written by and Mathew Kearney....
She says today is gonna be the last one
I know there's never gonna be an easy way out
She's rolling round the town with a fast gun
And I know I can't be there to catch her when she falls
Well half way down is half way out of here
We're either halfway drowned or half way â??round the pier
When you're that far gone

I walked the steps to her apartment with the window by the shore
And saw her curled on the tile through a crack in the door
I've been searching for the words I don't know how to say
I've been searching for the words to make it go away
I spent all of last night and the night before that
With my feet in the sand and the wind on my back

Watching a ship sail out to a blue wide sea
There must be more than this with a kiss we can't see
Well half way down is half way out of here
We're either half way drowned or half way round the pier
I can't break her, I can't break her fall
She's lying in the back room, crying on the bathroom floor
Singing I can't take it, I can't take any more
Just one reason, one to believe in
That's not that far gone
Not that far gone

I held the back of her head and laid her in the bed
And watched the sheets raise and fall to the rhythm of her breath
Turn the lock on the handle and slipped down the stairs
To the cover of the night with diamonds in the air
I'll say a prayer in my breath and take a left at the water
To the rhythm of my feet a sister and a daughter
To the rhythm of the sea with the breeze in the autumn
As it blows through the trees my hands into the water
Well half way down is half way out of here
We're either half way drowned or half way round the pier
I can't break her, I can't break her fall
She's lying in the back room, crying on the bathroom floor
Singing I can't take it, I can't take any more
Just one reason, one to believe in
That's not that far

I can't break her, I can't break her fall
She's lying in the back room, crying on the bathroom floor
And I can't take it, I can't take anymore
She says today is gonna be the last time
And I know there's never gonna be an easy way out

General CommentI don't really think it's as much about a drug addiction as it is just seeing someone you love fall to pieces. It could be about drugs, I agree with you CobCharles.

"She’s lying in the back room, crying on the bathroom floor
Singing I can’t take it, I can’t take any more
Just one reason, one to believe in
    That’s not that far gone"

I think he's saying he's watching a girl who's lost hope in everything, she doesn't know what to believe in anymore. When someone loses faith in everything, you can't just say "believe in this". He can't help her.

General CommentGreat song, one of my favorites by him. I’ve had the song on reply for the last few days and its still not getting old.

This song is about a guy who cares deeply for a girl who is struggling with an addiction of some type; alcohol or drugs. The girl can’t control her addiction and he has tried his best to help her through the addiction. He has tried his best to show her that somebody does care and is there for her. In his opinion he has done everything imaginable to help her hence “I can’t break her”. He doesn’t even know what else he could say to get through to her. He prays for her and thinks about her all the time. His biggest fear is that nothing he can ever do will help her hence “I can’t break her fall”

This song is about the guy cracking under the pressure of the girls addiction. It is hard to have no control at all in a situation, especially when it effects someone you care about. He wants to leave and forget all of the trouble and heartache she puts him through with her addiction, but he can’t. He can’t just leave her to fend for herself when everything seems so hopeless for her.

He has held on to hope for so long, hope that she will persevere and in the end he can’t ignore hope and how much he cares for her, no matter how much he wishes to forget it all.

The song really builds up at the end and you get the feeling he still doesn't know what to do about the situation. "she says today is gonna be the last time" She says its going to stop but he knows better, she has said it before and he knows that it won’t stop just because she says it will. No matter how sincere she is when she says it, its not that easy.

Which goes back to the song because he starts out the song with two lines that are quite similar to the last two lines... It’s a cycle. There are good times with the addiction and bad times. He can handle the good times when things are under control, it provides him with hope. But the addiction always catches up with her and he can’t take the bad times.

He is a confused mess. “And I know there’s never gonna be an easy way out” is him realizing that he’s never going to find an easy way out of this relationship because he can’t stop caring about her well-being.
This song pretty much sums up my last year or so. It reminds me of a girl I know and actually managed to walk away from after a long struggle with her addiction. I still wonder if I’ve really walked away from her, there is still hope and I still care.

General Commentisn't this what great writing is? haven't we all had someone whose fall we just couldn't break? although it's a difficult thing, to learn that you can't break someone's fall, and, for that person to learn that only they can break their own fall.....if you can both survive, it's a lesson that is better learned early.
