I could tell in the way
He did not kiss back
What's the use in painting faces
You're never gonna find a shade to match

Well yours is a common name
And I hear it all the time
Could belong to anyone
It could never be mine

I am tired
I am through
When I love I will love so hard
Harder than I could love with you

There's nothing in your eyes
But slightly amused
An offer of me you politely refused
Is it that my heart beat too loud
Is it that I did not bid it come down
Your round about etiquette
You hold the door but you won't let me in

I am tired
I am through
When I love I will love so hard
Harder than I could love with you
Harder than I could love with you

I won't make you flex emotion
I won't make you come a little closer
Do what you want
Don't do it for me
What's the use in chivalry

I am tired
I am through
When I love I will love so hard
Harder than I could love with you
Harder than I could love with you

I could tell in the way
He did not kiss back...

I could tell in the way

    i love this song.

she's loved him more than he loved her, and she could tell when she kissed him and when she spoke to him. he's amused, and he politely refused her love, and he's egging her on but he closes in on her when she takes a chance. she's tired of it and she's through with him, when the next one comes along she will love harder than she ever could have with him.

beautiful and simple lyrics that say everything!

    This song is perfect.

It came on my ipod and probably like the rest of you I had just gone through a break-up exactly like this. The song is so simple but gets at so much.

There's nothing in your eyes but slightly amused = genius

Yours is a common name and I hear it all the time Could belong to anyone it could never be mine...

I love those lines, mainly because my ex's name is very common and it's so hard to get over and away from someone when you hear their name everywhere.

Also, the lines "Is it that my heart beat too loud? Is it I did not bid it come down?" really hit me hard because I was recently in a relationship where I felt my heart was completely into it and the person knew how much I loved them, and when I thought they were on the same page they were actually so far off.

Like all of you, this song has so much meaning to me because of my recent break-up, and it hits home, but as for the meaning I think the name explains it all...

"Do what you want don't do it for me, what's the use in Chivalry?"--she's not actually condemning chivalry, just the act of doing something because you feel you "should" as opposed to actually WANTING to do it for the other person. Sort of like being in a relationship with someone and telling them you love them because you feel that's how you should be acting, when really you don't feel that way. Chivalry just perpetuates the confusion between men and women, and makes it easier for men to pretend. How many guys out there really are chivalrous because they want to be vs. how many do it because they think they have to? That's the difference between someone whose heart is really into it vs. someone who doesn't really know how to, or can't love as deeply.

I kind of feel like it might be about a relationship that never was, more-so than a relationship that ended. She put her heart out there for someone, they were in that beginning phase, and he never really felt the same way. He spends time with her, they hook up, she wants more, there isn't more. And this is her realizing that he's not going to love her, that she is wasting her emotions on him, and that when she loves...

I could tell in the way He did not kiss back < I think this is about the end of a relationship, when she knows it's going to end because of the way he kisses her - without feeling or emotion. > What's the use in painting faces? You're never gonna find a shade to match < This is just commenting on the way people try to paint their faces or act certain ways to attract a person, when this is useless because it's not going to lead you to your true love. You're never gonna find a shade to match the real you. I think in this song, she feels like the person she was seeing was merely "painting his face" to attract her or please her, but it wasn't real and is now causing the end of their relationship.>

Well, yours is a common name And I hear it all the time <I think this could have literal meaning or a deeper meaning. Literally, it could be talking about how her ex had a really common name, so now she is constantly reminded of him because she hears it all the time, as suggested by someone else. However, I think it's possible that this could be interpreted as the narrator realizing that the person she was with is just like everybody else, and she's realizing this now as she sees his traits repeated in lots of other people, something she didn't notice when they were together.> Could belong to anyone It could never be mine <This goes with the deeper meaning interpretation from the previous two lines. She's saying that his "name", or the way he is, could be how anyone is. He's not unique and she's realizing this. She's also realizing that this makes her incompatible with him because she's not just like everybody else and could never live that way.>

I am tired I'm through When I love I will love so hard Harder than I could love with you < She couldn't love as hard as she is able to with him because he was not real to her. She knows that when she finds the love of her life, she still has a lot of love to give. These lines show her hope for the future and the fact that he hasn't ruined her.)

There's nothing in your eyes But slightly amused < When she looks in his eyes, she can't see love or longing. He's simply amused by her, she could be anyone.> An offer of me you politely refused < She tried to be real with him and give herself to him, but he wouldn't respond.> Is it that my heart beat too loud < She's questioning why they weren't able to be that way together, wondering whether she scared him off by loving him too openly.) Is it that i did not bid it come down < She is still questioning wondering whether she should have had more self control when it came to loving him with everything she had; she's wondering if she should have held back, despite wanting to let it show.> Your round-about etiquette < His etiquette seems to be an effort to hide how he really feels.> You hold the door but you won't let me in < He goes through the boyfriend motions, he holds the door, he does sweet things for her, but his heart isn't in it. He can't be real to her, he can't let her in, he can only do the things society has taught him are good to do.>

I am tired I'm through When I love I will love so hard Harder than I could love with you Harder than I could love with you

I won't make you flex emotion < She never wanted him to fake feelings for her.> I won't make you come a little closer < She's not going to force him to be more open with her.> Do what you want Don't do it for me < She wants any relationship she has to be naturally occurring, not staged and forced.> What's the use in chivalry < What's the use in acting in a way just for the hell of it, as opposed to doing it because you genuinely want to or genuinely love the person that much.>

I am tired I am through When I love I will love so hard Harder than I could love with you Harder than I could love with you

Well, I could tell in the way He did not kiss back What's the use in painting faces? You're never gonna find a shade to match Well, I could tell in the way He did not kiss back Well, I could tell in the way, yeah, yeah He did not kiss back

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
