"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Tell me what I'm supposed to do
With all these left over feelings of you
'Cause I don't know
And tell me how I'm supposed to feel
When all these nightmares become real
'Cause I don't know
And I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find
(together)
And I don't know how we
Separate the lies here from the truth
(time)
And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what we're supposed to do
(together)
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
And I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find
(together)
And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what were supposed to do
(together)
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
'Cause I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find
(together)
And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what we're supposed to do
(tim)
...exactly what to do
With all these left over feelings of you
'Cause I don't know
And tell me how I'm supposed to feel
When all these nightmares become real
'Cause I don't know
And I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find
(together)
And I don't know how we
Separate the lies here from the truth
(time)
And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what we're supposed to do

So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
And I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find

Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what were supposed to do

And hang me up and out to dry
So leave me at the roadside
And hang me up and out to dry
'Cause I don't think you see
The places inside me that I find

And I don't know how we
Woke up one day somehow thought we knew
Exactly what we're supposed to do

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
"Tell me what I’m suppose to do With all these left over feelings of you Cause I don’t know"

"And I don’t know how we Woke up one day somehow thought we knew Exactly what we’re suppose to do"

"So leave me At the roadside And hang me Up and out to dry"
just let me be alone, i need time to think and you need to move on
...thats just what i think
I think this song talks about some sort of relationship that has its trust broken
The singer/whoever misses and still loves the other person but theres not much he can do about the situation, and then he realizes that its best to let go
I think this is exactly what it's about.

I had a girlfriend recently who I dated for 6 months. I found out she cheated on me 3 times, and each time I gave her another chance.

It was so hard to get over her. She was my first girlfriend, and I loved her so much and really wanted to be with her. She was someone I had crushed on for a couple years at that point... it took a lot of work to give her up.

Now that I'm over her, I see what was wrong, and this song was one of my favorites at that time.
This song has personal meaning to me, but it goes along with what I believe it is about.
It is about a girlfriend/boyfriend thing, but like the girl broke up with the guy (Tim narrating) and he still loves her, but she doesn't want him back. And no matter how hard he tries, he just cant get over this girl. "Tell me what I'm supposed to do, with all these leftover feelings of you, cause I don't know"
His nightmares becoming real are the fact that this girl he downright loves, has moved on, but he still hasn't, at a point believing there was still hope.
He also doesn't think she gets how much he really loves or cares for her and that he thinks of her in daily things that probably shouldn't remind him of her and what they once had. "And I don't think, you see, the places inside me that i find you"
"So leave me, by the roadside, and hang me out to dry" is a metaphor for just leaving him behind to move on with her life, because well if she left him at the roadside, she'd (assumingly) be in a car, able to speed off and get on with things quiker then him, who has to walk to the destination.
"and I don't know, how we, woke up one day somehow thought we knew, exactly what we're supposed to do" This just applied to my situation, because we split up mutually, but we thought we knew exactly what we were doing, but I know now that I really didn't letting her go...sorry about personal ranting on a public website people, i know that's what myspace is for.
@Sabresareus Great!!! You described my toughts as well
To me the song is:
Tell me what I'm suppose to do With all these left over feelings of you
Cause I don't know
The guy wants to move on, but he's still hurting inside, and doesnt really know what to do with himself. He's alone, and heartbroken
And tell me how I'm suppose to feel When all these nightmares Become real
Cause I don't know
He had fears that it would happen, but now that he has, he has no idea what to do or what to feel
And I don't think you see The places inside me That I found
Maybe he was immature or unprepared for the relationship, but now he is. unfortunatly, she hasn't relalised this.
And I don't know how we Separate the lies here from the truth
Maybe the trust isn't 100%, so they cant really go on together
And I don't know how we Woke up one day somehow thought we knew Exactly what we're suppose to do
one day they woke up, and realised that it wasn';t really going to work out between them
So leave me At the roadside And hang me Up and out to dry (2x)
He wants her to leave him alone, and for her to move on
And I don't think you see The places inside me That I found you
And I dont know how we Woke up one day somehow thought we knew Exactly what we're suppose to do
So leave me At the roadside And hang me Up and out to dry (2x)
Cause I don't think you see The places inside me That I found you
And I don't know how we Separate the lies here from the truth
And I don't know how we Woke up one day somehow thought we knew Exactly what we're suppose to do Exactly what to do.
beautiful song :) i like it x
Wow. This song definitly applys to me. Beautiful song, I agree with most of you on the whole relationship thing.
I think it's about a guy or girl whos love left them.
"Tell me what I'm suppose to do With all these left over feelings of you
Cause I don't know"
He still has feelings for her and doesn't know what to do with them.
"And tell me how I'm suppose to feel When all these nightmares Become real
Cause I don't know"
He was always so afraid to loose her, and now that he has he doesn't know what to do. Overall, he's numb and doesn't know what to think of all this or how to react to it. Hes empty and confused.
"And I don't know how we, Separate the lies here from the truth"
I think that he is thinking back to all the things she said to him and promises she made and can't figure out which were truthful and which were lies that he believed.
"And I don't know how we Woke up one day somehow thought we knew Exactly what we're suppose to do"
They thought they were meant to be and understood it all, but now he realizes that they were wrong and doesn't know how or why they thought that in the first place.
"So leave me At the roadside"
This reminds me of a quote from a Meat Loaf song called if God Could Talk... "If God Could talk, would he tell you it's alright just leave, and don't look back at all the memories the best of times, the mess you made of me, walk on, if you think it's gonna make you strong."
So basically he's just telling her to get on with her life and just leave him there to suffer the heartbreak. He also feels worthless and just wants to be left alone.
"And hang me Up and out to dry"
He's "wet" with his sorrow and sadness over it and he just want's to wait alone until he "drys" (feels better)but he knows only time and some "sunshine" (hope, good things, luck, optimism) will "dry" (heal) him.
"And I don't think you see The places inside me That I found you"
He doesn't think she realizes just how much she meant (and still means) to him. She was his everything, and now that shes gone he doesn't know what he has left.
Thats just my interpretaion of this song, but we all have our own opinions. This song really speaks to me and alot of other people who have recently gone through a horrible breakup. But in reality (Gosh reality sucks don't it?) it will get better in time.
instead of
"Woke up one day somehow thought how we knew"
it's
"Woke up one day somehow thought we knew"
i think falseillusion has the right idea, great song though, i'd like to see a video for it.
this song is good, but does anyone know who the female vocalist is? i can hear her on a couple different songs in the background behind tim's voice, and me and a friend were wondering who she is. well if you know lemme know please
It's Emily Schambra. She's the lead singer of a band called holy roman empire also from chitown.
This is a beautiful song- rivals 'Swing Life Away' in my eyes. Tim constantly amazes me with the amount of emotion he can carry in his voice- "And hang me up and out to dry."
I think it's almost definately sang from the point of view of someone in the aftermath of a relationship. The idea of being left "at the roadside" is so sad- it suggests he feels used up, torn up, discarded.
Great song. There whole new album is fantastic I'm so impressed with it.
