"Sam Hall" as written by and Tex Ritter....
Well, my name it is Sam Hall, Sam Hall.
Yes, my name it is Sam Hall, it is Sam Hall.
My name it is Sam Hall an' I hate you, one and all.
An' I hate you, one and all
Damn your eyes.

I killed a man, they said, so they said.
I killed a man, they said, so they said.
I killed a man, they said an' I smashed in his head.
An' I left him laying dead,
Damn his eyes.

But a-swinging, I must go, I must go.
A-swinging, I must go, I must go.
A-swinging, I must go while you critters down below,
Yell up, "Sam, I told you so."
Well, damn your eyes!

I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd.
I saw Molly in the crowd, in the crowd.
I saw Molly in the crowd an' I hollered, right out loud
"Hey there Molly, ain't you proud?
"Damn your eyes."

Then the Sheriff, he came to, he came to.
Ah, yeah, the Sheriff, he came to, he came to.
The Sheriff, he come to an he said, "Sam, how are you?"
An I said, "Well, Sheriff, how are you?"
"Damn your eyes."

My name is Samuel, Samuel.
My name is Samuel, Samuel.
My name is Samuel, an' I'll see you all in hell.
An' I'll see you all in hell,
Damn your eyes.

    General CommentI agree with wisewhiz.
It's about an unrepententant murderer named Sam Hall. He got caught, convicted, and his sentence is to hang. He wants the world to know that he doesen't give a crap about what he did and he will see them all in Hell. There is an uplifting, defiant sense of carefreeness (hey I just made up a word :-) ) about his crime and end.

General CommentThis song is so funny! I love it. There's not much to it...basically, Sam Hall's a guy who's crimes have finally caught up to him and he's going to hang for them. Everyone came to "see him off," so he responds being giving them the metaphorical one-fingered salute. He figures if he's got to go, he's not going to do so nicely, so "a-swingin' he must go."

General CommentI would also like to add that "Damn your eyes" implies to me that Sam thinks the crowd is as guilty as he is...they are killing him, just like he killed someone.
I personally think it is wrong to kill someone for killing someone to show the rest of society that killing is wrong. :-)
