In a field outside of town
We could always be alone
Carry a blanket, maybe a basket
And thats it
Innocence was the key
I was locked up never free
Until you turned me

Like vines we intertwined (like vines we intertwined)
Carelessly growing up and growing old
Life was on our tongues (on our tongues)
It tasted heavenly
So good

I wake up and I feel alone
I was just asleep
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad song

I knew this was a dream
It was too good to be true
Coincidences were a bit much too
Who wants to wake up?
Who wants to lose it?
Who wants to live in this place?
I don't, so I'll be sleeping in

Like vines we intertwined (like vines we intertwined)
Carelessly growing up and growing old
Life was on our tongues (on our tongues)
It tasted heavenly
So good

I wake up but I feel alone
I was just asleep
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad song

Blankets here keep me from cold
Holding tightly my pillow
Frantically searching for her
Inside my head she is somewhere
She is somewhere

I wake up and I feel alone
I was just asleep (I was just asleep)
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad song (sad, sad, sad, sad song)

I wake up and I feel alone
I was just asleep (sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep)
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad, sad...

General CommentThe narrator's dream is about a relationship with a girl who he pictures himself 'growing up and growing old,' with. When he is with her he can 'taste' life (feel alive), so he is very disappointed when he wakes up and feels alone. He goes on to resolve that he'll be 'sleeping in' and 'frantically searching for her' in his dreams. This sets the stage for the narrators future role in the albums other songs.

General Commenti love the irony of " inside the sad sad song" cause it sounds so happy but when you really listen

General CommentThe narrator finds himself in the middle of a dream. He's looking for a loved one somewhere in the dream, bumping into many coincidental ironies.
Totally sets the scene for the rest of the album's story, all in three minutes.

General Commentto me, it definnatly is a dream. just about innocence and love. hes dreamer about being with a girl, yet wakes up alone. he realizes that the life he did dream about isn't true. I love the irony too. I mean it sounds so happy but the lyrics tell you that the sound generally isn't happy.
