where the dry dust turns the sunset pink.
where all summer long it's so hot that you can't think straight.
where we pump water from a well by hand.
half a world away from the old promised land.
we understand that we've been given
a new covenant -- a real sharp one.
and we spend our days and nights
gaining new appreciation of its finer points.
and waiting for the dead to rise up from their graves.
waiting for jesus to come along and save us. and
biding our time.
biding our time.
biding our time as best we know how.

where the texas doughboys used to play
before the wind blew everything away.
where we came to get away from our friends.
where we'd tell each other jokes waiting for the world to end.
we know our jokes are funny,
but in all the wrong ways and for all the wrong reasons.
and we rent old George Romero movies
and relish the short time left.
waiting for the dead to rise up from their graves.
waiting for jesus to come along and save us. yes, and
biding our time.
biding our time.
biding our time as best we know how.

General CommentPretty clearly this is about the Branch Davidians. They were a group of Seventh-day Adventists who had broken away from the church and had a ranch/compound near Waco...they were led by David Koresh and were waiting for the second coming of Christ. Anyway, they were (legally) stockpiling weapons for the end of the world, and the ATF charged in there and both parties started shooting each other. Six of the Davidians and four agents died, and then after a two-month siege fires started that burned to compound and killed seventy six people.

General CommentThe lyrics in the boot Ive got are quite a bit different, but thats normal for John. My attempt at them:

Where the dry dust turns the sunset pink
where all summer long its so hot you cant think straight
where we drink water from a well by hand
half a world away from the old promised land
we understand what we've been given
a new covanent, a real sharp one
and we spend our days and nights
gaining new appreciation of its finer points
waiting for the dead to rise up from their graves
waiting for jesus to come along and save us
    and biding our time
    biding our time
biding our time as best we know how

Second verse is much the same, but its George Romero, not O'mera. He's the god of end-of-world zombie movies (Night of the living dead, dawn of the dead, land of the dead, etc. etc.)
