…If you calm down then just breathe and just breathe in and out…

It was buried under a flask in a cart of people
From the bottom of a glass all this
Nonsense, innocence, common sense, consequence
Indulgence in Bourbon, this herb, a Twin City kid’s just disturbed

I look around and see the same shit from her
She could just sit silent and watch her life just pass by in a blur
Ain’t it funny, we can sneak into our lives in a stir,
Over the perfect things to say and then just choke on the words

Everybody wanna be the next,
Everybody wanna be in step,
Everybody wanna fuck,
Everybody want the consequence without a defense,
Everybody got shit luck,
Everybody wanna move to they own beat,
Everybody wanna make a dent,
Every girl is looking for the next best thing,
Every boy is in love with his girls best friend,
Everybody hex me, everybody wanna fight.

We can’t stand and not burn in the sun, but can’t sleep in the moonlight,
I’m right there witcha, I’m sick of my own skin, I got the clothes and the jaded grin,
I’m at the bar or the coffee shop,
But I don’t like drinkin and I fuckin hate coffee shops

So I’ll just stop the world, it’s spinnin like a Tilt-a-whirl,
This ain’t amusement, ima lose it … it’s bullshit…
I give two cents but not everyone seems to have the same change
But can’t bring my father, two cents? I can’t spare nothing if I’m holdin the cup.

If you calm down then just breathe and just breathe in and out
You’ll feel a whole lot better, close your eyes
Just believe if you can’t see them then they can’t see you, right?
Close your eyes.

I can never be what I wanna be nothing but a man,
Nothings evil inside of me, nothing I can understand
If I try, so I try to get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand

I can never be what I wanna be nothing but a man,
Nothings evil inside of me, nothing I can understand
If I try, so I try to get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand, a fist…

And it’s strained to think it might be ok,
Scratch, crack, silence, fist…
And it’s strained to think it might break,
Scratch, crack…

I live in the city like any other,
We all live alone,
The only difference is we don’t seem to know it
Frozen and lonesome, it’s cold

In the summer gotta wait for the loathing
Holding our posture so low,
And we drink
so there’s not much worth noting.

Strolling, so vacant, so shaken,
So cold, so gone, so mistaken,
So broke so, so complacent,
So worn out, so worn out, so worn out

So full of doubt, so full of restraint,
So full of that self control,
Or the lack thereof,
That we doubt the soul.

If I try, so I try to get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand…

General CommentI've decided to beat a dead horse and post what I believe to be the correct lyrics. I've loved P.O.S. for a while now, and have listened to this song more times than I can tell. Hopefully that means something.

"If you come down and just breathe, and just breathe in and out
    (Whole lot better)...

It was buried under a flask in a
Carton (could be 'and I caught it') peeking from the bottom of a glass
All this nonsense, innocence, common sense, consequence...
    Indulgence in bourbon, this herb
A twin city kid's just disturbed

I look around and see the same shit from her
She can just sit silent, watch her life just pass by in a blur
    Ain't it funny
We can sneak into our lives in a stir
Over the perfect things to say and then just choke on the words

    Everybody wanna be the next
    Everybody wanna be in step
    Everybody wanna fuck
    Everybody want the consequence
    While playing the fence
    Everybody's got shit luck
Everybody wanna move to they own beat
    Everybody wanna make a dent
Every girl's just lookin' for the next best thing
Every boy's in love with his girl's best friend

Everybody hates me, everybody wanna fight...

We can't stand to wake up with the sun,
But can't sleep in the moonlight
    I'm right there with ya
I'm sick within my own skin
I've got the clothes and the jaded grin
I'm at the bar or the coffee shop
But I don't like drinkin' and I fuckin' hate coffee shops

I'm off to stop the world
    It's been spinnin' like a tilt-a-whirl
This ain't amusement, I'm-a lose it...
(Two cents, two cents, this bullshit...uh)
    Give two cents
And everybody seems to have the same change but can't break my five-oh (or five up)
    Two cents...
But I can't spare nothin' if I'm holdin' the cup, it's like...

If you come down and just breathe
And just breathe in and out
You'll feel a whole lot better
    Close your eyes, disappear
If you can't see them, then they can't see you
    ...Right?
    Close your eyes.

I can never be what I wanna be, nothin' but a man
Nothin's evil inside of me, nothin I can understand
    If I try
    So I try
To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand
    (Repeat)
    This... (or 'fist')

And it's strained, I think it might break
    Scratch
    Crack
    Silence
    This...
And it's strained, I think it might break
    Scratch
    Crack...

    I...
live in a city like any other,
    We all live alone
The only difference is we don't seem to know it
    Frozen and lonesome, Winter's cold
In the Summer, gotta wait for the loathing
    Holding our posture so low
And we drink, so there's not much worth noting

    Strolling, so vacant, so shaken
So cold, so gone, so mistaken
    So broke, so...
    So complacent,
So worn out, so worn out, so worn out
    So full of doubt
So full of restraint, so full of that self control
    ...or the lack thereof
    That we doubt the soul

    Chorus

I can never be what I wanna be
    Nothin' but a man.
Nothin's evil inside of me, nothin' I can understand
    If I try...
    So I try
To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand,
    A fist. (or this)"

Gotta love lyrical confusion. Anyway, how about what it means? The struggle for our ideal selves, or not even that. I think it's just about how we strive to be something we're not, and convince ourselves that it's better than what we are. Also, we ignore our problems sometimes, close our eyes to them...hard for me to explain, but you can definitely feel it when you listen to the song lol. Awesome song, awesome artist.

General Commenthere's my take -- I got it from listening to both the album track and the live track from the 89.3 Live Current vol. 2. Should be flawless:

It was buried under a flask and uh
Caught it peekin' from the bottom of a glass
All this nonsense, innocence, common sense, consequence
Indulgence in bourbon, this herb, and twin city kids, just disturbed

I look around to see the same shit from her
She can just sit silent, watchin' life just pass by in a blur
    Ain't it funny?
We can sneak into our lives and then stir
Over the perfect things to say
And then just choke on the words?

    Everybody wanna be the next
    Everybody wanna be in step
    Everybody wanna fuck
Everybody want the consequence of playin' defense
    Everybody's got shit luck
Everybody wanna move to they own beat
    Everybody wanna make a dent
Every girl is lookin' for the next best thing
Every boy's in love with his girl's best friend
    Everybody hates me
    Everybody wanna fight

We can't stand to wake up in the sun
But can't sleep in the moonlight
    I'm right there wit ya
I'm shakin' in my own skin
I got the closed and the jaded grin
I'm at a bar with a coffee shop
    But I don't like drinkin'
And I fuckin' hate coffee shops
I'm off the stop the world
    It's been spinning like a tilt-a-whirl
    This ain't amusment, I'm a lose it
(Got two cents) It was bullshit, uh
    Got two cents
But everybody seems to have the same change but can't break my five up
Two cents, (yeah right) but can't spend nothing if I'm holdin' the cup it's like

If you come down and just breathe, and just breathe in and out
You'll feel a whole lot better, close your eyes, disappear
If you can't see them, then they can't see you
    Right, close your eyes

I can never be what I wanna be
    Nothin' but a man
    Nothin's even inside of me
    Nothin I can understand
If I try, and so I try
To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand

I can never be what I wanna be
    Nothin' but a man
    Nothin's even inside of me
    Nothin I can understand
If I try, and so I try
To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand

    A voice,
    And it's strained to think
    It might break
    Scratch, Crack, Silence,
    Voice,
    And It's strained to think
    It might break
    Scratch, Crack,

    Ah!
Live in the city, like any other
    We all live alone
The only difference is we don't seem to know it
    Frozen and lonesome,
    When it's cold
In the summer gotta wait for the loathing
    Holding, our posture so low
And we drink so there's not much worth noting
Strolling, so vagrant, so shaken, so grown, so gone, so mistaken
So broke, so, so complacent, so worn out, so worn out, so worn out
So full of doubt, so full of restraint
So full of that self-control, or the lack thereof
    That we doubt the soul

If you come down and just breathe, and just breathe in and out
You'll feel a whole lot better, close your eyes, disappear
If you can't see them, then they can't see you
    Right, close your eyes

I can never be what I wanna be
    Nothin' but a man
    Nothin's even inside of me
    Nothin I can understand
If I try, and so I try
To get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand

General CommentI agree with mourningthebestofme, they are completely right. I feel like these lyrics are about how stupid people are, and POS is just talking about how the people that crowd this world are like and what they do. Very great lyrics and very amazing rap artist. People do strive to be something that we can NEVER be, but that is the way life is, and will be forever. Great song, the first time I heard I just had to repeat it over and over again.

General CommentYea, this is one of my favorite songs of all time.

    Here are my thoughts:

Its kinda like a recovering alcoholic's anthem - or, at least someone who wants to recover but can't. I think it starts with the reasons behind turning to booze (the ambiguous "it" in the first line) and being encouraged by everybody else doing it (my thoughts are that P.O.S. is Product of Society, and he frequently references the things other people do; also, it makes sense that to be a "product of society" would ruin your life).

"I can see the same shit from her" to me means he's looking at his girl, who is in just as bad of a state. She's fine with the life they lead and is o.k. with living life in a drunken blur.

He's also saying that isn't it ironic that we have such great plans for ourselves, and get consumed with finding purpose "sneak into our lives", but then we never act on them ("stir over the perfect things to say and then just choke on the words").

He then expands on this with the "everybody" stanza, noting that people want to be recognized and accomplished while also having fun and not taking sides/offending people (I hear "everybody want the consequence of playing the fence"). Basically, you can't have it all without being shallow.

To me this is the build-up, afterwards saying if you turn on society, you'll make a lot of enemies ("everybody hates me, everybody wanna fight").

There can be a lot more analysis viewing it in this light, but the take-home to me is that using drugs and alcohol as an escape only indicates the larger problem in the lives we lead.

Anybody else see this? I didn't look at it this way until I heard the song so many times that I memorized the lyrics and it finally resonated with me.

General CommentSo yeah, the part where he talks about spare change.
The line "but can't bring my father" is actually "but can't break my five up"

and to be more nit-picky, the part in the second stanza is supposed to say "watch her life PASS BY in a blur"

    yeah.
