We were playing in the sand
And you found a little band
You told me you fell in love with it
Hadn't gone as I'd planned

When you had to bid adieu (ooh, ooh, ooh)
Said you'd never love anew (ooh, ooh, ooh)
I wondered if I could hold it
And fall in love with it too

You told me to buy a pony
But all I wanted was you

Mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm (ooh-ooh-ooh)
Mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm (ooh-ooh-ooh)
Mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm-mmm (ooh-ooh-ooh)
Mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm-mmm (ooh-ooh-ooh)
(Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh)

    My Interpretation

I feel as though the first part is about a girl he meets, falls in love with, and has a child with.

"I wondered if I could hold it and fall in love with it too"

This is referring to a baby, holding it and falling in love with it.

"You told me to buy a pony But all I wanted was you"

This part's talking to the kid, how after the woman left him, he still has his child there to love and that's enough for him.

Maybe nobody else sees it like this, but I sure do. It occurred to me today.

"We were playing in the sand And you found a little band You told me you fell in love with it Hadn't gone as I planned"

So, the singer is playing a band on the beach. The lady fell in love with their music and the band. She is a complete stranger and never planned on falling in love (haha see what I did their?)

"When you had to bid adieu Said you'd never love anew I wondered if I could hold it and fall in love with it too."

They fell in love, but for some reason, she had to leave (That's what bud adieu means if you didn't know: leaving). She promised to only love him and him only but when she left, he fell out of love, hence the "I wondered if I could hold it, and fall in love with it too."

"You told me buy a pony But all I wanted was you" She called him for the first time, probably manipulating him, asking for things years later. and just by hearing her voice, he remembered the things they did and fell back. I honestly think this song is just about hopeless love.

    My Interpretation

I think this song is about a person trying to propose at a beach \n\n"We were playing in the sand\nAnd you found a little band"\n\nthe band is referring to a ring, a band. Of course, the narrator had planned to give it to the other person, before they found it, hence the "hadn\'t gone as i planned"\n\nI think the narrator tries to get the ring/band back again so they can actually propose, under the excuse that they want to "fall in love with it to"\n\nWhen the second person refuses in a playful manner, the narrator might feel like the other is trying to dismiss their feelings. \nThe "buy me a pony" line could also be interpreted as the other making some request that they know the narrator can\'t fulfill, essentially turning them down.\n\nOverall, amazing song! i like the demo version a lot, and i enjoyed hearing other\'s takes on the meaning :)

on the last wave, there is a backwards message that asks "Wouldn't the world be better off if we took nonsense more seriously?"

A perfect cap to such a fun album.

TristynS, I like your interpretation, but it means something else to me. It's about a girl. The one I'm in love with, we were together, and she left for college, and refuses to speak to me. She hates me. Honestly, I cry about it every once in a while.

    The bit at the end

"You told me to buy a pony, But all I wanted was you"

I think it is about a girl who wanted her boyfriend to buy her things(pony because its one of those stereotypical things girls want)but he was happy just with her there.

    My Interpretation

Note that no where in the lyrics that it's interpreted that this was a woman he was talking about. This is also how I interpreted the song, the lyrics can have many different meanings.

We were playing in the sand And you found a little band

Two people were playing in the sand, the songwriter one of them as he is narrating the song. The other person had found something in the sand while they were playing. I think they were bestfriends or lovers at the beach. The little band was shells at sea washing away into the sea. I think signaling death. Sea shells washing off the beach and disappearing.

You told me you fell in love with it Hadn't gone as I planned

The person told the narrator that they had fallen in love with the shells ( the band ).The person was suicidal and wanted to leave like the shells disappearing in the water and that wasn't what the narrator had planned.

When you had to bid adieu Said you'd never love anew

The person was going away and wishes happiness to the other. The person told the narrator that they had no one else they loved like the narrator.

I wondered if I could hold it And fall in love with it too

The narrator is wondering if they could hold the shells, and fall in love with them like the person had. Therefor leaving the earth.

You told me to buy a pony

The person had told the narrator to love someone else before ( before they were gone ) But the Narrator had interpreted it differently and as "to buy a pony" which is sort of a sub phrase of the phrase "i want a pony". "i want a pony" usually means they want something impossible, so here I think the narrator was thinking that the person was wishing something impossible on them.

But all I wanted was you

The narrator only wanted them. "was you" is important here. I think it would be "but all I want is you" if the other person was alive or present in the narrators mind/life. The narrator had only wanted the other person.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
