"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
The words are coming
I feel terrible
Is it typical for us to act like this?
Am I just another scene from a movie
That you've seen one hundred times?
Cause baby, you weren't the first, or the last, or the worst
And I've got to fill the blanks in the past with a verse
We could sit around and cry
But frankly, you're not worth it anymore
So say hello to all the boys
At the top of this table that you're under
Lipstick lullabies
This is sorry for the last time
And baby, I understand how you're making new friends
This is how you get by
The moral this time is
Girls make boys cry
And I...
On any other day I would shoot the boy
But your simple toy had caused a scene like this
Leave him hanging on the walls
Just a picture in the hall
Like a hundred more
(Like a hundred more)
Consider this as a gift as you taste him on your lips
And he's making you scream with his hands on your hips
I hope he's leaving you empty, baby
This is just a fix for such a simple little whore
So say hello to all the boys
At the top of this table that you're under
Lipstick lullabies
This is sorry for the last time
And baby, I understand how you're making new friends
This is how you get by
The moral this time is
Girls make boys cry
And your name remains the same
All that has changed is this pretty face
So pull the trigger
It never gets closer
You want to start over
But never start over
Pull the trigger
It never gets closer
You want to start over
But never start over
So say hello to all the boys
At the top of this table that you're under
Lipstick lullabies
This is sorry for the last time
And baby, I understand how you're making new friends

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
onsider this as a gift as you taste him on your lips, And he's making you scream with his hands on your hips. I hope he's leaving you empty baby this is just a fix, For such a simple little whore.
Some of the best lyrics ever written.
this song is more about the guy than it is about the girl. he got fukced over by this girl he thought he loved. and now hes payiing her back by not caring what she does. he finally realizes that she isnt worth his time.
and at the end, "you want to start over but never start over." she realizes he was something special and now she hates herself for doing such horrible things.
"Am I just another scene, From a movie that you've seen one-hundred times?"
Priceless.
Consider this as a gift as you taste him on your lips And he's making you scream with his hands on your hips I hope he's leaving you empty, baby This is just a fix for such a simple little whore
^ i use that stanza as a quiet attack on myspace and aim profiles against the girl who's trying to cling to the guy i love. their phrasing is just flipping amazing.
"GIRLS MAKE BOYS CRY"
--this is saying that girls should stop bullshiting about how horrible boys can be. most of the time it is the girl that screws the guy over.
i love this song. like crazy. ah.
I think the song is about a guy who's had his heart broken by quite a few girls as the lyrics go "Cause baby, you weren't the first, or the last, or the worst" and this girl has cheated on him and he thinks all "girls make boys cry". And I agree with the girl who commented about the party game where the girl gives a guy a blowjob under the table and you've gotta guess who is recieving.
this song is awesome. i love the anger put into this song. and how his voice is so clear. i can hear every word. i could listen to this for hours. haha, i guess i have.
I think this song is about a boy who wasted all of his time on a girl that cheated on him the whole time. She broke his heart, and in the end he stopped making excuses for her. "The moral this time is girls make boys cry." There was no reason to "shoot the boy" because it didn't matter that he had gotten with his girlfriend. She had gotten with so many other people as well, it was ultimately her fault.
When he says she's leaving them hanging on the wall I think he has a double meaning. That she seduces boys and leaves them hanging by not calling them, and that she thinks of boys as trophies. She's gotten with a certain number of boys, and it's something to be proud about.
"So say hello to all the boys at the top of this table that you're under" What an AMAZING lyric. There are so many sexual lyrics in this song, "I understand how you're making new friends, this is how you get by" so that leads me to believe he's been cheated on, but he was just pissed, not depressed about it. "We could sit around cry, but frankly you're not worth it anymore." He does feel bad about whatever insults he's spitting out, though, I've been there lol. "The words are coming, I feel terrible."
I love how passionate and angry the tone and mood is in this song. It really makes me love the song more, it shows how real the lyrics can get. ^__^
