"Wishing Well" as written by Annie Leslie Roboff and Phil Vassar....
Throw down your hat, kick off your shoes
I know you ain't goin' anywhere
Run 'round the town singin' your blues
I know you ain't goin' anywhere.

You've always been a good friend of mine,
But you're always sayin' "Farewell"
And the only time that you're satisfied
Is with your feet in the wishing well.

Throw down your gun, you might shoot yourself...
Or is that what you're tryin' to do?
Put up a fight you believe to be right
And someday the sun will shine through.

You've always got something to hide
Something you just can't tell
And the only time that you're satisfied
Is with your feet in the wishing well.

And I know what you're wishing for
Love in a peaceful world
Love in a peaceful world
Love in a peaceful world
Love in a peaceful world

You've always been a good friend of mine,
But you're always sayin' "Farewell"
And the only time that you're satisfied
Is with your feet in the wishing well.

General Commenti believe that this song was written to Paul Kossoff-the lead guitarist-at the height of his addiction and was probably meant as a plea to get his act together

General CommentIt may seem that way but the song really isn't about that. That was just a popular speculation that turned into a big rumor.

The song Come Together in the Morning is a lot more likely to be about Kossoff and the bands past.

My InterpretationThis song was written I think about the break up of Free. They had been together for over 3 years and were about to become very successful. However there was always an underlying problem. The musical chemistry of Paul Rodgers and Paul Kossoff blended beautifully, however it didn't give Kossoff the musical freedom to express himself, which is a shame because in the eyes of their fans, it actually worked very well.

This song is an attempt to re focus themselves towards making good music and playing good music.

Essentially, the singer (Rodgers - PR) is talking directly to the band members, but I would say to Kossoff (PK), predominantly.

Take off your hat, kick off your shoes, I know you ain't goin' anywhere
Run 'round the town singin' your blues, I know you ain't goin' anywhere.

    - What's the problem guys, we are making good music. We're jamming tight. Why are we going around being blue (disillusioned). There's no where else that we need to go. We can achieve everything we want right here, within the group.

You've always been a good friend of mine,But you're always sayin' "Farewell"
And the only time that you're satisfied, Is with your feet in the wishing well.

-The singer is telling PK we are friends, so why this need to always look over your shoulder and look for something else. It's a case of what human kind essentially suffers from - this need to want something other what we already have. Lets be contented with what we have. Lets not set ourselves idealist goals, that we will never achieve. Lets understand that what we have is something good, in the first instance.

Throw down your gun, you might shoot yourself...Or is that what you're tryin' to do?
Put up a fight you believe to be right, And someday the sun will shine through

Singer tells PK, give up these ideas of leaving the band. It also deals with with PK's drug addition. Singer asks, what are you trying to do - kill yourself? Putting up a fight means you feel that your adamant that you need to leave the band in order to vist pastures new - (where the sun shines)

You've always got something to hide, Something you just can't tell
And the only time that you're satisfied, Is with your feet in the wishing well.

Something to hide or something we just can't tell - seems to be a staple diet of people who feel they need to do something, but can't express what, why and how they need to this. Again it's an idea that we have, that we think, that something is better round the corner, or over the next hill. Hence we feel a sense of satisfaction in being in that idealist (or wishing) state.

But the singer now tries to help PK by saying - let me try and understand you. I think I know what you want.

'And I know what you're wishing for, Love in a peaceful world'
He's telling PK - Heck - Your looking for what we are all looking for. Love in a peaceful world. We are setting ourselves all these targets (objectives). But what is the primary objective in anything that we are trying to do. We are simply trying to find peace and happiness in this world.

In the closing stages of the song, the singer tells us that everybody has a wish, everybody has dream. We are all chasing the same thing.

The essence of the song is to bring the group together and say - yes chase your dreams, but we can realise those dreams together, whilst we are in this group and making good music. No need to run anywhere.
