she feels like a stranger has come in the night and stolen her life and left her with this and boughs break on ebony toothaches
she is a flask trapped inside a fall
i know you need to find what you thought you left behind in a past life
i won't question why the only light that you have you give away
i know you need to find what you thought you left behind in a past life
i won't question why the only light that you have you give away
she feels like a stranger has come in the night and stolen her life and left her with this

General Commenti agree, i'm playing it in my piano recital. my teacher asks "so who is this by?" and i say "man man".

she just didn't understand. so then i said well, the guy who wrote it's name is "honus honus".

she didn't take to that either.

so i finally got her his real name (ryan kattner), and she agreed to let me play it.

basically, this song inspired me to start playing piano.

General CommentI saw Man Man play live in Austin a few weekends ago, and they as usual started with this song.
They had the Extraordinaires come up with them and chant it behind them, which was pretty amazing. Usually when this song is played live they jump in Engwish Bwudd but at the concert they busted out a new song. I talked to Honus Honus after the show and he said the new album will hopefully be out in March.
Anyway, this song is so straightforward and powerful. It reminds me of "Ocean Breathes Salty" by Modest Mouse. Mostly because it deals with the concept of someone who doesn't truly value what they have (life/"light").

    General Commentjust caught this:

"she's just a flask trapped inside a phone"

comfort, that soothes him when she calls? the only cure for his insanity?

    General CommentCorectionnnsss.

"She's just a flask trapped inside a fold." Like, a fold of clothing, I assume.
"I won't question why the only life that you have you gave away."

In any case, it's a beautiful song. Definitely one of my favorites by Man Man.

General CommentI think that this song simply has to do with suicide. I could be off, just what it comes across as to me.

General CommentIt's not about a suicide, per se. It's more like, she doesnt know who she is anymore. The "stranger" that came "in the night," is what she's become. She opened her eyes one day and didn't know who she was or how she got there.

It could also be about betrayal. Someone broke her... not her heart (it's not a sappy love song...) but broke her spirit. Changed who she was. Someone she didnt like. To the point where it's hard to see the purpose of living.

.... At least that's what it means to me when I listen to it. With the exception of maybe "I, Manface" this is probably my favorite Man Man song. It's so simple and rythmic and dark. I just LOVE it.
