"The One That Got Away" as written by and Mann/moore....
Oh, oh
I stood by the exit door of the hotel cafe
He was playing with his band
I've always been a sucker
Had a weakness for a boy with a guitar and a drink in his hand
His words were like heaven in my hurricane
My knees buckled under
I thought everyone was watching me
Watching you save my life with the song

You were mine
In the back of my mind
Oh, just for one night
Just for a while

There's always one that gets away
The one that sneaks up on you then slips away

Two weeks later I was sitting in his apartment
He was making cappuccino
I said, 'what kind of man makes cappuccino?'
We laughed
We laughed
We laughed
We laughed till tears ran down my face

Oh, but, my man, you're someone else's man
And that ain't the man that I want
But you keep drawing me in with those big, brown, lying eyes

You'll always be mine
In the back of my mind
Oh, we had a night
Just a little while

There's always one that gets away
The one that sneaks up on you then slips away

In a closed off corner of my heart, yes
I'll always see your face
The one that got away
One that got away
The one that got away
The one that got away
Oh, the one that got away
The one that got away
Oh, the one that got away
The one that got away
Oh, the one that got away
Yeah, yeah
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Yeah, yeah
Oh

I'm not a victim of cliches
I don't believe in soul mates
Happy endings, only one
Oh, and I met you, and all that changed
I had a taste, and you're still sitting on the tip of my tongue

You were mine
Somewhere in time
I'll look for you first
In my next life

There's always one that gets away
The one that sneaks up on you then slips away
Slips away
In a closed off corner of my heart, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I, I'll always see your face
The one that got away
The one that got away
The one that got away
The one that got away
Oh, the one that got away
The one that got away
Oh, the one that got away
The one that got away
The one that got away
Yeah, yeah
Oh, oh, yeah
The one that got away

General CommentAhhhhh.... I love this song. Yeah, i love a lot of Pink's songs, but this one especially. I can just imagine everything she describes.
It's like, there's always that guy who is like the rock star person whatever who just really impresses you not just with looks but with their talent and attitude, they just change your life. It's just about someone who's really great but in the end you just don't ever end up together.
I really like this line: "I thought everyone was watching me watching you save my life with the song" it kills me b/c it's so great.

General CommentDoes the first verse remind anyone else of "Killing Me Softly"?

I love this song. It's so different from all her others (not that the others are bad, just I like that she has lots of different styles)

General CommentEvery time I hear this song I crack up cos when I saw her in Adelaide she was introducing it then she stopped and goes "You know, every time I sing this song it seems more ad more like a stalker song...do you think it sounds stalker-ish?" So funny.

General CommentThis is just one of those songs that is picture-esque. Unfortunately I know the story all to well. Ugh those rock star boys are always the one's the get away...to the wrong girl.

General CommentThis song always makes me smile. I can never stop singing it after I hear it. It's just so simple and cute even though it's not exactly about something happy. I love pretty much all of her stuff, but this song just sticks out as one of those nice refreshments when you just want some sweet chords and a beautiful voice and nothing else.

I just have to point out, though, that the line "...those big brown LION eyes" is actually "...those big brown LYIN' eyes". It's inside her CD booklet thing. I see that mistake everywhere.

General CommentThis song hits really close to home with me.
Also, a bit of the lyrics are wrong. It's supposed to be:

Oh but my man you're someone elses man
And that aint the man that I would want
But you keep drawing me in with those big brown lying eyes

    You'll always be mine
In the back of my mind
    Oh we had a night
    Just a little while..

Anyway, this song is about meeting someone really special, and you both feel that connection and have this amazing chemistry. Everything is just right between you two. But he has a girlfriend who's kind of a fixture in his life, and he can't -or won't- leave her. The girl knows this, but there's no bitterness or resentment there, there's too much love.
But not enough that the girl would disrespect herself and cling desperately to a taken man (even though she does a little bit still, in her mind), so she remembers the nights they've had and their friendship. However, she still feels pain at the thought of him "getting away".

General CommentI get the killing me softly thing, brokenmatchstick. I wouldn't be surprised if either lauryn hill or roberta flack were one of her influences. which is good!

also, I'd LOVE to know who this song is about......anyone?
