"Won't Give In" as written by and Neil Mullane Finn....
You call me up
I'd say a few words but
I'll try not to speak
Too long.

Please to be kind and
I'll try to explain
I'll probably get it
All wrong.

What does it mean when
You promise someone
No matter how hard
Or whatever may come

It means that I won't give in,
Won't give in
Won't give in
Cause everyone I love is here,
Say it once, and disappear.

Once in a while
I return to the fold
With people I call
My own.

Even if time
Is just a flicker of light
And we all have to
Die alone.

What does it mean when
You belong to someone
When you're born with a name,
When you carry it on.

It means that I won't give in,
Won't give in
Won't give in
Cause everyone I love is here,
All at once,
And I'll show you how to get here.

Come on now
Come on now
Can you feel it
I can see it in you.

Come on now
Come on now
Reveal it
Turn around won't you.

The right time
The right place
Right now
Turn around.

A chance is made
A chance is lost
I carry myself to the edge of the earth.

It means that I won't give in
Won't give in
Won't give in
Cause everyone I love is here,
Say it once, just say it,

And disappear

i love this song. i live near woodstock, and on WDST, theyplayed this all the time around Christmas. It was so fitting.

there's much to be said, i don't think i fully understand the song myself, but i'll get to it later. :)

General CommentI don't understand this song much either.

The first time I heard this song, it was during a scene in one of my favourtie dramas. The son of a recently beaten up taxi driver, had dropped his father off in his own taxi, because the old man had just been threatened, and was a little shaken. The son, instead of dropping his dad's taxi off at the company, started picking up passenger's and earnng his dad's twice than he would have that night.

I dunno. It was cute, and that's what I think about when I hear it.

General Commentbasically, as most of the songs on the album it's about family (you're born with a name and you carry it on). he describes a situation where he comes home to a family celebration to speak up (i'll say a few words, but i'll try not to speak to long). i actually read that in some interview as well.

General Commenti've never read the interviews so i don't know what the intent was, but i have always taken the song as being told from two points of view -- one where a person is confused about the meaning of family, possibly because s/he doesn't feel like his/her family really cares or accepts him/her, and the other perspective is of the friend who is basically saying, we're not going to give up on you, we all love you whether they do or not, and you always have us as a 'family.'

anyway i'm not saying that this is the meaning of the song at all but that's how i take it, in any case.

General CommentFor me this song is about suicide and not giving up on life. I always think about Paul Hester when I hear this song even though it was written well before he died.

General CommentNot really, this is a really positive song, about all you have to cling to in life, promises and committments and such, that really make life worth living.

Song MeaningI checked out an interview the Finn Brothers gave about the song; here it is:

"Track 1 is Won’t Give In. The song talks about ‘Everyone you love’ being here…

Neil Finn: The line Everyone I love is here was kind of in my mind about the commitments you make
to people with the witnesses of your friends and your family and I guess it’s not solely a
marriage we’re talking about but the kind of idea that you’ve got a whole lot of people
who watch you as you make your declarations in life and it doesn’t happen that often for
us, we’re pretty private, New Zealanders, and it’s nice. I think the song’s got a sense of
ritual about it in that sense. It’s about a declaration, I suppose, and unafraid to be
sentimental, and it just felt like now we were talking, the song needed to be in relation
to the way families exist together and they pass on from one generation to the next
because we’re right in the middle of it at the moment. We’ve got our dad who’s 82 years
old and we’ve got our kids who’re various ages, Tim’s youngest is 18 months,"
