We got somethin', we both know it, we don't talk too much about it
Ain't no real big secret, all the same, somehow we get around it
Oh listen, it don't really matter to me, baby
You believe what you wanna believe

You see, you don't have to live like a refugee, no

Somewhere, somehow, somebody must have kicked you around some
Tell me why you want to lay there and revel in your abandon
Honey, it don't make no difference to me, baby
Everybody has to fight to be free

You see, you don't have to live like a refugee
(Don't have to live like a refugee)
Oh baby, you don't have to live like a refugee
(Don't have to live like a refugee)

Oh baby, we ain't the first
I'm sure a lot of other lovers been cursed
Right now it seems real to you, but it's
One of those things you gotta feel to be true

Somewhere, somehow, somebody must have kicked you around some
Who knows maybe you were kidnapped
Tied up taken away and held for ransom
Honey, it don't really matter to me, baby
Oh, everybody's had to fight to be free

You see, you don't have to live like a refugee
(Don't have to live like a refugee)
No baby, you don't have to live like a refugee
(Don't have to live like a refugee)

No baby, you don't have to live like a refugee
(Don't have to live like a refugee)
Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah
(Don't have to live like a refugee)
Oh baby, you don't have to live like a refugee

    My Interpretation

Well, i was wondering about this song and maybe it may have some lesbian related issues. Seems like the "baby" is kind of afraid of this love, why??? Why live like a refugee (a refugee in straight world). Sometimes is hard to say what's is fictional and whatr is bio on a artist's work...

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
