"Birds" as written by and Bic Briollette Runga....
Take your time
Make peace with the day
Lie on the ground and think of me
Nevermind what people will say
Talking is thoughtless and cheap

I only said it to be kind
I won't pretend to be naive
And thoughts arrive...
Like leaves on the page
Trying and hoping to be
You and I like birds in a cage
Dreaming how once we were free
The evening closes on the
I saw you hiding in the eaves

Don't leave me hanging on the wire
A shadow underneathe the trees

I only want you to be mine
I only want you to be free
If either one of us is right
It must be seen to be believed

I only want you to be mine
I only want you to be free

General CommentThese lyrics arn't fully correct. The second line is "Lie on the ground and think of me."

I really like this song although I'm not too sure what it is about. Obviously something about being cages like birds. Perhaps a relationship where the love has died down and both people feel trapped?

If this is true then the final lines, I only want you to be mine, I only want you to be free, would be conflicting and irony as though she wants both these things, they cannot co-exists. Her 'only' wants can never be fullfilled completely.

I love the stanza aboout 'hiding in the eves' ... the lyrics are amazing. I think it shows how the two are disconnected, as if he is hiding from her, leaving her hanging, helpless.

I also really love Bic's singing towards the end, it is beautiful.

General CommentOne of the interpretations I have of this song is that it is about a couple that got engaged but as the wedding day approaches the girl is not sure anymore that it's what she wants (I imagine her telling the guy "I only said it to be kind" [that I'd like to marry you]). They are anxious about what the other people are saying -- "nevermind what people will say" -- but they feel this external pressure to make a decision and "seal their fate" as a couple.
