It always rained around you
We tried to go inside and it would rain there too
It came pouring through the roof when we traveled underground
Whiskey, water, and tears 'til I thought that we would drown

Chorus:
Jolene, Jolene
Is it still raining everywhere you are?

We didn't hide from it at all
No we just let it fall
In the morning she was gone and everything was dry
The city streets were crowded and I felt like I would die

Repeat chorus

Now there's sunshine and flowers everywhere
And I don't care

All of these clouds will disappear
Like we were never here
But I swear there was a time I thought that it would never stop
And now I only think about you if it's raining or not

i agree with what you guys think but im trying to see a little different. maybe they were in the relationship and as much as she cared about him she was really depressed and he couldnt make it better, she needed to find herself again so she left. and then he says, "in the morning she was gone, and everything was dry.... and now theres sunshining flowers everywhere.. & i dont care." thats like she left, and is feeling better being alone but he still loves her, and thinks about her blah blah.. just another look at it.

This sounds like a song about a girl named Jolene (obviously lol) who was either a downer or bad luck just seemed to follow her. Also with the mention of whiskey it sounds like maybe she had a drinking problem. That had a negative effect on her relationship. Even though her "lover" doesn't seem to mind he is willing to work through all of their problems. Jolene, afraid of commitment, runs away leaving him alone with what would seem like an easy life to anyone else besides him. Because even though the relationship was hard, he loved her and she was it for him. Now that he doesn't have her, he doesnt know what to do. So now he wonders if she is like that still or if she has moved on and is happy.

    At least that's what I got. =]

i like the last line alot: "And now I only think about you if it's raining or it's not" meaning, he still thinks about her all the time.

    the breakdown, in my opinion..

so there's this girl, Jolene. she's not the easiest or most agreeable person in the world, but who would really want to be those things anyway? from the "whiskey, water, and tears" line, i think that maybe she didn't handle alcohol in any fabulous manner and tended to get emotional after a few drinks. but she was wonderful, to Steve or someone like him anyway. bad luck follewed her wherever she went, but she completed him. when she left, possibly because she felt as if she was a bother or a hassle to deal with, she left the city they had together called home. because she had been it for him, his only one, his misses her horribly and constantly wonders if she's fighting her way through the clouds or if she's finally being touched by the sunshine.

In a bleaker sense, this song could be about a girl he know, or loved, who was really depressed. Because of her depression there was always a dark cloud looming over her head (constant raincloud = raining everywhere she went). The reference to whiskey could be portraying her own self-medication techniques (drinking). And maybe he says he felt like he would drown because he feels a little overwhelmed trying to help her with her problems. Then maybe one day she commits suicide, which could explain how she was just suddenly gone, and he doesn't have to help her anymore but he feels like he should've done more which would explain how he felt like he could die. Now, naturally, she's always on his mind.

Then again it could be something else, lol.

Oh, and I forgot to mention:

The line in the chorus "Is it still raining everywhere you are?" could be him asking if she's happy wherever she is (Heaven, Hell, six feet under, wherever)

To me, this is about a boy who is in love with a girl, but she's either very moody or very unlucky.

after getting tired of this, he leaves her, and things are better. But even though she is a fuss, he misses his Jolene "Now there's sunshine and flowers everywhere: and I don't care" But she's gone for good and he doesn't know how to find her "is it still raining everywhere you are?" Gorgeous<3

I'd have to agree that my interpretation of the song is mostly based around depression. "it always rained around you" (rain signifying that the depression isn't new to "jolene" it's something she's known for a while) "We tried to go inside and it would rain there too" meaning that they (or he at least) did all he could to try and help her escape from the clutches of depression. "I thought that we would drown" meaning that her depression was no longing just bringing her life down but turning into the death of the relationship that he is still very emotionally involved in however her depression has her detached from all of the emotions one would feel in a break up. "we didn't hide from it at all, we just let it fall" it wasn't a secret that she was unhappy, they both watched their relationship fall apart. "in the morning she was gone, and everything was dry, the city streets were crowed and I felt like I would die" she left (maybe to find herself) and although he is surrounded by people none of them matter because they aren't "jolene", even with her depression she's the best part of him in his mind. "now theres sunshine and flowers everywhere, but I don't care" Even though he no longer deals with her depression that once clouded his everyday, he wonders if it "still rains" where she is because it does for him, but a new kind of rain, one in which he knows that they aren't right but he can't help but love her endlessly. "all of these clouds will disappear, like we were never here" He knows eventually he will get over her. and although that is probably for the best it also hurts because when relationships end they are forgotten by most people except those involved. Like ending a long relationship and months later it's like you weren't ever in it because they've moved on or you have. It's as if they were never in love. "I swear there was a time I thought it would never stop, but now I only think about you if it's raining or it's not" meaning that he thought the depression and the impact on their relationship that it had would never let up, they would never be able to be together because she could never be fully in the relationship with her depression looming. Now the saddness isn't because of her depression but because he is having to live without her for the first time since experiencing it all and he is so overwhelmed.

mad props to this song. love it. spent way to long with someone who was depressed. you can do everything possible to try and make it better but it's no use, depression can only be dealt with by the person feeling it.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
