This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
You look nice alright
and I like the way you nod after everything I say
like it actually means something
to you
And I like your record collection
Townes and Jens with a hint of Rickie Lee
And you’ve cleaned up the bathroom, made a really nice soup
but a bit too much sci-fi in your shelf with DVDs
But there’s some things you need to know about me:
I’m weak right now, real weak right now
I need proof before I dare to open this heart
so I prepared a quiz for you:
Would you freak out if I said I liked you?
Do you walk the line?
Is your IQ higher than your neighbour’s?
And is it very much higher than mine?
Can you sleep when I grind my teeth?
Do you look away if I slob when I eat?
Will you let me be myself?
Can you at all times wear socks?
because I’m still scared of feet
Do you talk in the middle of Seinfeld?
Do you read more than two books a month?
Do you get racist or sexist when you’ve had a few?
Is it fine if I make more money than you?
Have you slept with any people I work with?
Is there anyone you’d rather wish I’d be?
Do you still keep pictures of old girlfriends?
Are they prettier than me?
And if I’d fall, would you pick me up?
If I fall, will you pick me up?
and I like the way you nod after everything I say
like it actually means something
to you
And I like your record collection
Townes and Jens with a hint of Rickie Lee

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
I love this song! I think it's about a girl who's recently been hurt and let down by a guy, and now she's too afraid to lay out her heart again. So when she meets this new guy who seems alright, she still can't open up because she's afraid of betrayal, so she basically asks him whether he would stick by her. So cute<3
When she says "Jens", is she referring to Jens Lekman? Because if so, I'm going to dance in a fit of joy. I LOVE BOTH OF THEM
She is referring to Jens Lekman! She's even said in interviews that she really likes him as well :)
UBER song seen her(them) live twice, you just got to love this music :D
Some corrections though I’m weak right now, so weak right now.
And if I’d fall, would you pick me up? And if I'd fall, would you pick me up?
and after Can you at all times wear socks? because I’m still scared of feet
there should come a "And if I’d fall, would you pick me up?And if I'd fall, would you pick me up?"
this song is adorable! haha. geeky love-song. gotta love it :] just melts my heart. hehe
such a great song! the lyrics are really on the spot! basically she's been hurt before and now meets up with this new guy and she has all these silly demands when all she really wants is for this guy to stick around even when things in her life get bad
I absolutely LOVE this song. So cute :)
this is actually the most adorable song ever. "can you, at all times, wear socks? cause i'm still scared of feet.."
@shut up hannah. I love that line...
I'm pretty sure it says Lykke Li instead of Rickie Lee. (Especially considering that they're both swedish)
yeah, I'm pretty sure she's not saying lykke li. this song is written one year before lykke li even started making music.
You're right. Didn't think to check that.
I think it is 'is your iq higher than the average...' am I not right?!
