"the theft" as written by Daniel Jacobs, Travis Miguel, Ektor Varkatzas, Brandon Saller and Marc Mcknight....
He bends and he breaks
If you kiss it will take away
His passion, his pain, his brain

he excels
A thousand black flowers explode
Into butterflies as they're away

Rip them, I'll take them
Burn to coals as they crush
And leave nothing that
Resembles a soul of a man

See him numb, see him crushed
See him numb, see him crushed
Rip them, I'll take them
Burn to coals as they crush

And leave nothing that
Resembles a soul of a man
Leave him numb, leave him crushed
Leave him numb, leave him crushed

Just a fire inside one too many times
He's burning over and out now he fails
Up against the raging tides
No more fights
Everything you ever wanted to see
I see it in his eyes
One more time, one more time

My time to test the waters
My hands feel like they're rusting away
So obvious, so numb, I can leave before the slaughter
I'll stay here, as long as you let me

Decisions, then, made obvious, and while they're in tune
Where I started, I'll stay there
When I'm finished
I'll wither away

Rip them, I'll take them
Burn to coals as they crush
And leave nothing that
Resembles a soul of a man

See him numb, see him crushed
See him numb, see him crushed
Rip them, I'll take them
Burn to coals as they crush

And leave nothing that
Resembles a soul of a man
Leave him numb, leave him crushed
Leave him numb, leave him crushed

General Commentfor me, i think this song has to be one of the best they've ever made. even though it isnt as heavy as their other stuff, it goes to show that atreyu can make awesome songs that don't require a heavy or hard beat. alex can sing as well as scream and it shows more in this song then on the others. i think with the choir and whatnot in the intro, it helps make the song that much more awesome. it kinda reminds me of that scene in edward scissorhands when the girl is dancing while edward is making the angel out that big piece of snow with the whole scene all slow and stuff. amazing.

General CommentThen why do you even bother posting? Everyone so far has either been with them, or against them. There could maybe..oh, I don't know...be a REASON Alex rarely screams? In case you didn't notice, M. Shadows's voice was completely blown by his own cokie-monster growl, maybe Alex learned from that?

And to those that, and I qoute, find these lyrics both bad and 'so utterly gay,' why even bother to post in the first place? You don't like it, fine. We don't care. This site is about what songs mean, not about how gay you find them, but about how you feel they reflect what, what do they reflect to you, etc. etc. Not how 'utterly gay' they are.

General CommentI agree with AtreyuxRoxs. JUst because they don't scream their motherfuckin guts doesn't mean its a bad atrey song/ This is my 3rd fav song by atreyu(after bleeding mascara and lip gloss and black) I was surprised when i learned he had such a great voice.

General CommentI think they're is a heavy duality in this song.

First, their is an issue with a girl. It has to do with him giving everything and recieving nothing in return. It eventually eats him alive leaving him numb. Climb down to test the waters, my hands feel like they are rusting away would refer to trying to get away from her but realizing that no one can match in his eyes what he has found. So he waits like a lamb to be slaughtered IE crushed by this girl who takes advantage of him. So instead of meeting new girls he will just let this one crush him.

The second duality which I'm surprised no one mentioned has a similar meaning to the first but replace girl with Victory records. He gives and gives to them and they abuse and expolit what they have put their heart and soul into. I.E the "best of" CD. (I already have the best of CD but its called all 3 CD's, there isn't one CD that can sum it up.)

I thkn the Video reinforces the business theory. But when he is the kid walking through the ballroom, i think its representative of how he felt. He was actually a grown man that still felt like a kid. At then end he realizes what is important IE making the music your passionate about and not what some coorporate execs want.

General CommentFirst of all Id like to say that I agree with Captain Dorkstar a few pages back. It really doesnt make any sense to go through the trouble of setting up an account on here just to complain about bands or the songs u dont like. I think this site is more meant 4 u 2 describe what a song means 2 u not to complain about it. Maybe you guys just arent reading? It clearly says 'What does this song mean to you?' not 'Why are you such a jackass?' so if u dont like this song or Atreyu then find a band u do like and find a song u like and comment about what it means 2 u. mmmm k Thanks!
So anyway, to appreciate a band you must embrace its creativity and diversity. Lucky 4 us Atreyu is an incredibly diverse band that can take u from A to Z in 2 songs flat. This song is very close to my favorite Atreyu song because of what it means 2 me, the fact that it shreds is a bonus.
I believe 'The Theft' refers to the heart and soul. A man is completely swept away by a woman and she destroys him leaving him 'crushed and numb' with nothing that 'resembles the soul of a man'. He loses himself in her and then loses her altogether and in the end of the song he is trying to pick up the pieces 'climb down and test the waters' but he just cant make it back 2 reality. Very sad and meaning ful song. Especially with the way it ends with the strings. (I think its strings) I love how Atreyu can kick your ass and then sing a ballad the next song!

General CommentFIrst all of you who say these lyrics are gay- fuck you.
If youve seen the music video, it makes perfect sense. A little boy is twisted and shaped into what others want him to be. He never has "his time to test the waters." In the video it shows a little boy playing with a plane. This boy goes to some fancy party all dressed up. THe rest of the video shows him succeding in everything. HOwever, he is never happy. At the end, he returns to where he was playing with the plane

General CommentWhat are you guys talking about!? This song's awesome! Maybe cause I'm not as much into their super screaming stuff as you all probably are. I love this song! Plus I think the lyrics are intelligent and sweet. Still can't think what it exactly means, but I can just feel it.

    General CommentExcels = Exhales

i can leave before the slaughter = like a lamb before the slaughter

I agree with inevercamester. The intro is really similar to the music Tim Burton used in Edward Scissorhands (Danny Elfman?). Also the part about hands rusting away gave me that impression that Atreyu used that film as inspiration for this song. Certainly one of Atreyu's most subdued numbers, but excellent. Alex proves he can sing well.

General CommentThanks for the support Captain_Dorkstar. Anyway, I haven't heard too much of Atreyu so I don't know if they normally write about what I think the meaning is, so who knows. Here's what I think... I think he's talking about "the theft" of innocence from a person. "No more fights" meaning he's numb to corruption and finally he's become hardened to it all. The chorus supports this as well ("rip them, i'll take them burn to coals as they crush and leave nothing that resembles a soul of a man see him numb, see him crushed"). Maybe he's talking about the devil, how he sees a boy going to hell and how finally its kicked his ass ("my time to test the waters"). Anyone see where I'm comin from? Just a thought... A definate song that you can just feel (in the mood of the song) like relates without even knowing exactly what it means. Absolutely brilliant!
