It's four am, I'm waking up to your perfume
Don't get up, I'll get through on my own
I don't know if I'm home or if I lost my way into your room
I'm spiraling into my doom, I'm feeling half alive

But I know one day you and I will be free
To live and die by our own rules
Free despite the fact that men are fools

I'm almost alive
And I need you to try and save me
It's okay that we're dying
But I need to survive tonight, tonight

Well, excuse me while I get killed softly
Heart slows down and I can hardly tell you I'm okay
At least till yesterday you know you caught me off my highest guard
Believe me when I say it's hard, we'll get through this tonight

And I know one day you and I will be free
To live and die by our own rules
Free despite the fact that men are fools

I'm almost alive
And I need you to try and save me
It's okay that we're dying
But I need to survive tonight, tonight

And you touch my hand ever so slightly
Girl, I'm not ready for this yet
And the deadly looks you cast upon me
I won't regret, I won't regret, I won't regret, I won't regret

And I was trying to disappear
But you got me wrapped around you
I can hardly breathe without you

I was trying to disappear
But I got lost in your eyes now
You brought me down to size now

I'm almost alive
And I need you to try and save me
It's okay that we're dying
But I need to survive tonight, tonight, tonight

I'm almost alive
And I need you to try and save me
It's okay that we're dying
But I need to survive tonight, tonight
I need to survive tonight, tonight

first song that i ever heard, and it got me hooked after the first two lines- i swear.

the meaning is obvious, i think. he loves a girl, and she loves him too, but they can't make it work no matter how hard they try. i wish that wasn't the story of my life.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
