(Ooooooh, oooh-ah)
Now I told you so you ought to know
(Oooooh) It takes some time for a feelin' to grow
(Oooooh) You're so close now I can't let you go
(Oooooh) And I can't let go

With you I'm not shy, to show the way I feel
With you I might try, my secrets to reveal
For you are a magnet and I am steel

I can hope that I'll hold you for long
(Oooooh) You're a woman who's lost to your song
(Oooooh) But the love that I feel is so strong
(Oooooh) And it can't be wrong

With you I'm not shy, to show the way I feel
With you I might try, my secrets to reveal
For you are a magnet and I am steel

(Oooooh)
(Oooooh)
(Oooooh)

With you I'm not shy, to show the way I feel
With you I might try, my secrets to reveal
For you are a magnet and I am steel
For you are a magnet and I am steel
For you are a magnet and I am steel

I think the song is about old love that he can't get over or is rekindled. It could go both ways. He might not have been able to get close with this person but when he is by her, he makes the most of it. Maybe this other person doesn't like him as much, we don't know. But it is obvious that he really wants to be near her and he feels what they have is real.

Whats going on here? How come l'm the first to comment on this song?? One of the best love songs of the 20th century, very easily written and beautifully composed. Cheers Wally Egan

This song is obviously about love. Great score there, Einstein. But what kind of Love? The lines "it takes some time for feelings to grow" Suggests a long awaited love, Perhaps a frienship that tuns into something more? Or a long romance that has only just become serious? Either way, the song is clearly stating a deep affection and uncontrolable urge to be with that certain someone. This love is different to others, more real, a serious love. Wait a second... this sounds exactly like my love life! The same love life that has me roaring drunk at this very moment, trying to forget my depression and hurt he brings every time we kiss. Damn him!

He's told this woman "I love you", and she doesn't understand it but accepts it; although she doesn't love him, she has feelings for him ands wants a life with him.

His love for her grew rather quickly for him when they met it wasn't as if he was meeting someone new, it was as if rekindling something that had been somehow lost.

He knows she doesnt love him but understands her love for him needs time to grow. He accepts her for who she is simply because he loves her tremendously. The secrets he has shared with her only she knows. She's the only one on the planet who truly knows all of him, it simultaneously scares him and makes him feel good at the same time. This man is strong but feels oddly safe even from his personal demons in her arms.

Uncontrollably he's drawn to her and wants a life with her and she feels that same longing for him, together they are Magnet and Steel.

I know exactly how he feels... I love you Jamie.

This song was written about a woman who has left many good men in her wake How do I know ? I was one. Don't even know if she remembers me... New Years Eve 1996. Her name to me was Dolly. Most everyone else she was Stevie Nicks. I never knew til 2015 when the puzzle fell into place. I know how you feel Walter. Sand through your fingers.

    Song Fact

Guys, this song was written by Egan when he was enamored with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. She even sang back-up vocals on the original recording of the song. Egan fell hard for Nicks but, though they dated briefly, she did not return his feelings.

So Walter was smitten with Stevie Nicks, wrote a song about her and even got her to sing backup on the song. A step in the right direction perhaps. Compose a song about what you know. But if this is the only memorable song from a career, well, that is a bit tough. The music business is a tough mistress.

He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
