oh, lie
I thought you were golden
I thought you were wise
caught you returning
to the house you caught fire
but I know that I was your favorite
and I said amen

wise, found favorin' heaven
and I at your side
but I never felt sorry
for those shimmering lies
when I laid down and cried
I was faking
and I said amen

last night I dreamt
that I hit a deer with my car
blood from his heart
spilled out onto my dress and was warm
he begged me to follow
but legions of sorrow defied me

oh, lie
I thought you were golden
I thought you were wise
when I caught you returning
to the house you caught fire
but I know that I'm your favorite
and I said amen
oh, favorite
and I said amen

General CommentI think this song is about an affair with someone she is deeply in love with. He was the lie. They broke it off but loved each other and he resurfaced, and they were discovered by the other person she was in a relationship with, and it destroyed that relationship. That's the house that caught fire. Maybe it was a beautiful, intense affair that she followed him into and was only supposed to be for a period of time, and when he returned, or they couldn't stay away from each other and she was found out, she felt sorrow for the man whose heart she broke, but inside she was grateful because it allowed her to be with this man, who she truly loved. The part about the deer is her ex, whose heart was broken and wanted her to come back, but she couldn't.

General CommentThis song is even more amazing live than as a studio recording. Worth going to see her live just for this song and "Set Out Running". She has the voice of an angel.

General CommentI concur. This song is amazing live. Thankfully she put out "Live from Austin TX" recently so I can enjoy it without seeing her every day.

General CommentThis song makes me think it's about a young woman in a relationship with an older man. It's as if she loves him, but not with her whole being, rather because he offers her some kind of security or convenience.

General CommentShe is singing about a past relationship. When she says "found you returning to the house you caught fire" she means that the relationship is over (because he screwed it up) and he is trying to come back. She is his favorite means that he will not get over her. Any one have any ideas about the deer blood?

General CommentThe part with the deer I think may be about suicide. Wanting to follow the thing into death, maybe feeling especially bad after hitting an animal with your car, but knowing about the legions of sorrow that follow suicide. In a way, others' grief does stand between you and death, so it can seem like legions of sorrow defying you.

On the Live at ACL album she also plays "Behind the House," which contains the lines "Or is this your way to tell me / that I couldn't save you?" Those lines imply a sense of guilt and failure, I think. Many songs on the album seem to have something to do with death and sorrow. Since I always listened to the album as a whole, I thought of "Favorite" as being about someone you love who you've lost. I heard the line "Found favorin' Heaven" as "Found favor in Heaven." So then it's not just following the deer, but following the lost beloved someone, perhaps feeling an obligation to.

That may be reading too much into it. But it's worth noting too that the song's got the feeling of a prayer.

    General CommentLove this song.

There's a clip on youtube where Neko says this is the very first song she ever wrote by herself.
