Shannon Lyrics

Another day is at end
Mama says she's tired again
No one can even begin to tell her
I hardly know what to say
But maybe it's better that way
If Papa were here I'm sure he'd tell her

Shannon is gone
I hope she's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she'll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our backyard

Mama tries hard to pretend
That things will get better again
Somehow she's keepin' it all inside her
But finally the tears fill our eyes
And I know that somewhere tonight
She knows how much we really miss her

Shannon is gone
I hope she's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she'll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our back yard ...
Just like the one in our back yard .....

I was named after this song. Yup. Named after a dog. Sweet.

@shannyre I named my daughter after it also, it was before the songs background info about it being about their dead dog came out. I just heard it playing at the hardware store at the same time i was chatting with my Shannin, so I told her the song I named her after is playing. I also told her why I never shared the attachment to the name she got. She said love is love. she just heard the song for the first time, and she is 36

This song is about the death of the pet dog that the singer had as a child. It describes the pain that all of us that have had pets have to ultimately deal with when we lose a best friend. Whether it's a human being or an animal, they can mean the world to us. It tears us up when you realize that they won't be coming back, and all you have is the memories.

@richie dear richie: GOD BLESS you. what a beautiful reply of yours. it shows that you have a great grasp of human emotion. may you bless many people with your great insight. thank you. JESUS LOVES you.

I saw Henry Gross last night as the support act for Joe Brown. Henry explained that he met with Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, who told him that his dog Shannon had died. Henry also had a dog called Shannon and Carl's loss affected him deeply. He went home that night and sat with his own Shannon and wrote this song.

Umm....Richie, this song is about Carl Wilson's (of the Beach Boys) Irish Setter, not about Henry Gross' dog.

@kevwiz Can't it be about both? Did Henry's affection for his own dog help him to write the song?

Okay Kevwiz, but it doesn't change the meaning of the song. But thanks for letting me know that fact, did not know that.

Well of course, sometimes the know-it-all takes control even tho I know so little, I should have mentioned you hit the meaning on the head too. Too bad he didnt have other hits, great song.

I didn't understand the song as a kid. I thought some cruel person (the Dad in the song?) had taken the dog and dumped her, and then made up some story for his family about her 'swimming away'. It always made me cry. I feel so much better now I know the real story behind it, about a much loved pet and dealing with the loss. Still sad, but in a happy-sad kind of way. The love you have for a pet as a child stays with you.
