You've got this new head filled up with smoke
And I got my veins all tangled close
To the jukebox bars you frequent
The safest place to hide

A long night spent with your most obvious weakness
You start shaking at the thought
You are everything I want
'Cause you are everything I'm not

And we lay, we lay together just not
Too close, too close (how close is close enough?)
We lay, we lay together just not
Too close, too close

I just wanna break you down so badly
Well, I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way

My inarticulate, store-bought
Hangover hobby kit, it talks
And it says, "you, oh, you are so cool"
"Scissor-shaped across the bed"
"You are red, violent red"
You hollow out my hungry eyes
You hollow out my hungry eyes

And we lay, we lay together just not
Too close, too close (how close is close enough?)
We lay, we lay together just not
Too close, too close

I just wanna break you down so badly
Well, I trip over everything you say
Well, I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way

I just wanna break you down so badly
Well, I trip over everything you say
I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way (worst way)

I'm gonna make damn sure
That you can't ever leave
No, you won't ever get too far from me
You won't ever get too far from me
I'll make damn sure
That you can't ever leave
No, you won't ever get too far from me
You won't ever get too far from me
You won't ever get too far from me (ever get too far)
You won't ever get too far

I just wanna break you down so badly
Well, I trip over everything you say
Well, I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way (worst way)

I'm gonna make damn sure
I just wanna break you down so badly
I just wanna break you down so badly
In the worst way (worst way)

"You start shaking at the thought you are everything I want 'Cause you are everything I'm not"

This song is about someone who wants someone but knows they are our of their league because of whatever reasons the narrator feels inferior. So the "laying together, just not too close" means there only going to be friends and he wont be able to "bring/break" her down to his level so they can date.
So in the final verse when Adam starts saying: "I'm gonna make damn sure that you can't ever leave No, you won't ever get too far from me" he's letting out his anger of the realization that he constantly has to go thru because he is chasing the unobtainable!

I think it's about this girl that he's crazy over, and is trying to impress her as much as he can. The first verse is about how they're both confused about something, so he tells her the best place to hide. When she goes to that place, he talks "to her", even though she is gone, because he doesn't have the courage to say it to her face. The second verse is him complimenting her, but he can only do it because he is drunk (My inarticulate store bought hangover hobby kit), which is why its so clumsy. The chorus is saying how she makes him "trip over" with her words, because he is so crazy for her. He is trying to "bring her down" to his level, because he thinks she is above him. The last line of the chorus tells us that he doesn't really care if she likes it or not. The pre-chorus contradicts this, by asking if he is moving too fast, and getting too close. In the breakdown, Adam just goes on about how he is going to make sure they are together, and keep them together (kidnap?).

Well, it's just what I got from it.

I think they pushed the title together to show that the boy is trying to make this happen as fast as possible (since having no spaces cuts out the pauses in between)

ok i may be wayy off.. but i just thought of a possible interpretation for this song.. So when he says "You've got this new head Filled up with smoke..." hes saying that she can't see clearly as he sees things, maybe she had been hurt in the past and doesnt want another relationship and so shes got this new way of thinking.. She frequents bars and picks up guys and so she hides from relationships and commitement. "Long night spent with your most obvious weekness.." her weekness is her desire for sex or the physical attachement and this excites her .."start shaking at the thought.." "You are everything i want.." She is the opposite of him.. he wants a relationship, a commitement, and he plays it safe, whereas she seeks excitement now and wants casual flings instead of a commitement with one person.. and so he wants her (kind of like when you wana be with someone that will teach you something but at the same time you can teach them new things..each person brings something new to the relationship) or perhaps they differ in views about love and he wants to prove her wrong really badly.. Obviously, "we lay close.. but not too close.." they may be dating or sleeping together but deep down he knows he doesnt have all of her ( her commitement to him only, her emotional attachement, maybe all he has is physical, but thats not enough for him.) "I wanna break you down so badly.."he wants to break down the wall that shes build up (because of perhaps bad experiences that shes had with relationships in the past..), and maybe tame her, make her his.. but she keeps refusing him..saying no.. "I trip over everything you say" and it hurts him.. or maybe this line means that he likes her soo much and everything she says makes him only like her more.. he falls more and more in love with her..(when you trip you fall.. i dont know..) "scissor shaped across the bed.." Shes probably a player and so getting involved with her can be dangerous.. he could risk gettin his heart broken because of her lust ( she is red, red = lust) and the "hollow out my hungry eyes.." he really wants her and keeps trying to make her his but she keeps rejecting him.. but hes "Gonna make damn sure that [she] wont ever leave.." hes not gona give up on her because he thinks shes worth fighting for... (aww cute!!) And maybe relating it to the video.. she views relationships as something disasterous.. but he wants to show her that they can be something beautiful.. anways i dont know.. thats what i got from it.. i may be totally off tho :S Btw their new album is great!! I love TBS!!

First off I can see TBS getting back in toach with TAYF which is awesome! i'm a huge john nolan fan and i could see him singing/playing this song. shuan would have added some better bass but this conversation is about an album old lol. But i saw TBS alot in the one line "I just want to bring you down so badly" cause it reminds of stuff like "... And my eye down the scope of a barrel of a gun" and "you could slit my throat..." definetly back to TAYF. I think the new album will be so progressive musical but a reversion to TAYF lyrics. I dont know this one song could be a trick.

i think this song is about an affair. that's why the bar is the safest place to hide, we lay together to close, but not to close, maybe because they have prior commitment with some else, and maybe that's why he wants to break her down so badly because shes so much more interesting then his old lady. Im gonna make damn sure you wont ever leave, could mean he is going to be very discreet so it wont ever end. I think

First Comment. :D Its not as complicated as some of their other songs and the meaning is sort of clear. I think it could be about wanting someone but they don't want you, or its infatuation because you "only want to bring them down" I don't know..

Their writing has gone down hill. God damn, I miss John Nolan in this band. But oh well, I still love me some TBS every once & awhile.

I definitely DO NOT think that their writing has gone down hill at all. Taking Back Sunday is an amazing band.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
