"The Greatest Man I Never Knew" as written by Richard C Leigh and Layng Jr. Martine....
The greatest man I never knew lived just down the hall,
and ev'ry day we said hello but never touched at all.
He was in his paper. I was in my room.
How was I to know he thought I hung the moon?

The greatest man I never knew came home late ev'ry night,
He never had to much to say. Too much was on his mind.
I never really knew him, oh and now it seems so sad.
Ev'rything he gave to us took all he had.

Then the days turned into years, and the mem'ries to black and white.
He grew cold like an old winter wind blowing across my life.

The greatest words I never heard I guess I'll never hear.
The man I thought could never die has been dead almost a year.
Oh, he was good at bus'ness but there was bus'ness left to do.
He never said he loved me. Guess he thought I knew.

General CommentI believe that this song is about a woman whose father was physicially IN her life, but not emotionally.

General CommentThe one thing I really love about Reba, and especially in this song, is that she has so much power and emotion in her voice. Besides just having an amazing voice, she really puts her emotions into her songs.

General CommentThis songs reminds me so much of what my mom has told me about her relationship was like with her father. He has never told her he loved her, was gone a lot as a kid, they just never connected and it broke her heart. He is still around, and I can tell that he does love her, and thinks the world of her, but has never even come close to telling her that.

My InterpretationTo me this songs tells of the relationship between a father and a child. Although the father thinks the world of his child and is proud of everything she's become, he doesn't know how to express it. He's got a lot going on in his life and on his mind. It doesn't seem to bother her because she's used to it. Although they live so close to eachother, they're extremely distant. Years go by and he gets old and sick. The unexpected yet unavoidable happens and the father dies. She realizes how much he really did love him but how little they actually knew about eachother.
