"Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly" as written by and Ville Hermanni Valo....
Heaven ablaze in our eyes
We're standing still in time
The blood on our hands is the wine
We offer as sacrifice

Come on, and show them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul

This endless mercy mile
We're crawling side by side
With hell freezing over in our eyes
Gods kneel before our crime

Come on lets show, them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
Don't let go
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
For your soul

Come on, and show them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
Don't let go
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)

For your soul

General CommentFirst of all can anyone else confirm that HIM didnt originally stand for His Infernal Majesty?

If it does indeed stand for His Infernal Majesty that right there says that they do worship the devil and this is probably what they are singing about.

    Heaven ablaze in our eyes
    We're standing still in time
The blood on our hands is the wine
    We offer as sacrifice

I think they are saying in these verses that Heaven is ablaze in their eyes because they have committed a very bad crime. Time is standing still while God looks down on them and they turn away from God by offering the blood from their crime as a sacrifice to the devil.

Come on, and show them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
    For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
    For your soul

I think the chorus is the clearest part of the song. It probably means something along this line. Come on and show them your love for me(the devil). The rip out the wings of a butterfly is a metaphor. The butterfly represents something good(best example is an angel) and the ripping out the wings is having to do with doing something to that good thing to ruin it or at least show that u dont respect that thing or hate it.

    This endless mercy mile
    We're crawling side by side
With hell freezing over in our eyes
    Gods kneel before our crime

I think these verses mean that: They are crawling this endless mercy mile(the path to hell), side by side(so there was 2 or more people involved in the crime). With hell freezing over in our eyes is probably one of those things where someone would say that that will happen when hell freezes over and so the crime or whatever they have done would happen when hell froze over. And the final line is basically a form of trickery in a lie. God would never kneel before a evil crime...this is said to lure people into thinking that the devil is the supreme ruler when in reality he is not.

Well thats my 2 cents....im not saying i hate this song...I love the catchy tune, i just dont like the message if it is really what i think it is.

General CommentI think this song means that a couple commited a crime and to solve this problem they must 'rip out the wings of a butterfly, for their soul' so to speak. I know it's a metaphor but that is what I think it means.

Also when it says, "Don't let go, My Love" I think one person is trying to guide their lover in order for them both to be happy in heaven together. And when that happens hell freezes over because they have both made it to heaven. Also when they say, "Come on and show them your love", it means to show the Gods that you love them. And I believe that love is the most powerful thing out there.

When the Gods kneel before their crimes, it's like they forgive them because they have atoned for their crimes.

That is what I think anyway. We all have our opinions. I just wanted to share this one because this is an awesome song.

General CommentI'm sorry, but Dark Light is where my appreciation for HIM ends. Sorry to say it HIM fans, but Valo really missed the boat with this record. This song is so annoying, even i can't defend them anymore. Not to worry, Finland is a talented country, and although there headlining act may have fallen from grace, there are still PLENTY more talent where they came from.

General CommentIt's sybolism. The wings of a butterfly are like the clothes on a person. you rip out the wings of a butterfly, and they stand naked and vulnerable... at least thats what i took it to mean.

General CommentHonestly, I have to somewhat agree with rebelprincess34. I started out hearing about how "HIM was such a great band!" and "It's Bam's fave band" (I saw them on his show, thought they were great), so when I heard this song, I thought, "Wow, I have to download this song!". Well, today I bought their CD thinking, "Oh well, I'll find other songs I like on it, why not?". I didn't like it. I've only liked "Wings of a Butterfly". Anyways to the meaning of the song. It looks like when he is saying "Heaven ablaze in our eyes" and "Hell freezing over in our eyes" something is going on that no one can stop whatsoever except this one person who has to make a sacrifice in order to save it. My other guess, in the "Gods kneel before our crime", this person has committed a sin and has to let go of something ("Rip out the wings of a butterfly, for your soul") in order to be forgiven.

General Commentlol, thats ok. I guess. I think when he says 'Dont let go, my love' He means for the girl not to give up just yet, and not give up on him, when he needs her most as I have said about them being together etc.
