The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

this is the most perfect song for what i'm going through at the moment. i absolutely love this song, and this is how i interpret it:
She likes him. A LOT. he may, or may not, like her back. regardless, she is falling so fast for this guy, and it's killing her to keep all of her feelings bottled up, so she tells herself she has to tell him how she feels. but, everytime the perfect opportunity comes up to talk to him and to be with him, she freezes up, and lets it's slip by. then, she feels heavily burdened by it all. It crushes her emotionally because when people like someone a lot, but it's not going anywhere and they don't know how to express their feelings or when to say the things they need to say, they feel exactly like this. i know i have. and you probably have too.

Because of my belief that you can't love someone who never loved you back, I think this song is about someone who regrets all the times she didn't do something about liking this guy. And he's killing her and doesn't even know it. "Crushed by the softest hands I've never held", she knows what she's missing but doesn't know how to get it.
