"Liar" as written by and Ozzy/wylde Osbourne....
And even though I told her of the danger
She went ahead and did it anyway
Ended up in the dark see-Train dying
Looking pretty on a Saturday

Call 911
There's a girl in trouble
She's raped and broken
It was done by my double

A kid I knew in central park, oh
I met him in a local cafe
He told me hard luck stories of his childhood
I took his life by the light of day

I can romanticize or I can realize
That my whole life's been living as a liar
But when I walked away
With their blood on my hands
I knew I'd reached for something higher

The cabarets of Liverpool and Luxembourg
Have closed for marrow reconstruction
I'm leaving Sunday on a boat
For Alta Mesa junction

I've got a friend there
He'll take care of me

General CommentChrist, this song is probably the scariest song Stars have done. I don't know what it's about exactly, as I've never heard any of the band members comment on it. But, knowing Stars, they've probably derived it from a movie.

Buuuuut, the idea I've got is that there is basically just the progtaganist who is pretty messed up in the head.

He lives a partying-kinda life, and the beginning of the song suggests that he warned a girl of the dangers of serious drug-use and she ends up in a critical condition. He rapes her in this state and then, in his "mentally-messed-up" state he claims it was done by someone nearly identical to him.

*correction...it goes "a kid I blew in central park"*

The progtaganist is a bi-sexual too. A while ago, he met and blew a younger boy. And now he meets him again in a local cafe. The kid recounts tales of his childhood, and the progtaganist murders and rapes him. Once again, he claims it was done by his double.

And finally, the progtaganist comes to the realization that what he is doing to these people is just totally fucked up and he leaves on a boat for Alta Mesa junction. He has a friend there that might be able to help him come back to reality and humanity.

General Commenti wasn't sure if it was "a kid i knew..." - i don't have the physical cd so i could only transcribe by ear, though, and that's what i heard. thanks! now that you mention it, i think the full lyric might be "a kid i blew in central park called." correct me if i'm wrong.

i agree with you on the events of the story, but i think the (unreliable) narrator has multiple personalities/is disassociative. he almost taunts the listener by saying "it was done by my double" right after "i took his life by the light of day." i'd be surprised if the last verse wasn't eventually included in a horror movie. i think he thinks that by leaving, he'll leave all of his demons behind.

General CommentI think the "friend" referred to at the end of the song might be another facet of that lovely MPD the narrator seems to possess.

General Commentyeah, it is most def the most disturbing song they've done, i think.
what is the "something higher" [than his life as a liar]?

General CommentAt the end of the song he is committing suicide. Alta Mesa is a cemetery in California. The friend who is going to take care of him is death/God/the Devil.

General CommentI agree with Prianka; he realizes all of the horrible things that he's done or has taken responsibility for his actions and he decides to commit suicide.
