This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
What will you do when it gets cold inside
Lock yourself into your little room and die
Daydream all day about discovery
Lock yourself away and hope someone breaks down the door
All for a girl you destroy your world without hesitation
For crimson lip and caramel eye you push the button on tomorrow
Someday someone will follow in the footsteps you have hollowed
But it won't be her
And it's gonna take a while to learn
All the things that you thought that you would rather yearn
Earplugs are safely placed to filter out
Any reason any logic that might trickle in
You don't wanna hear it
All for a girl you destroy your world without hesitation
For crimson lip and caramel eye you push the button on tomorrow
Someday someone will follow in the footsteps you have hollowed
But it won't be her
And it won't be me
Well you did your best and she her worst
Now you just wait and see
How will it happen why does it matter
It's been so long and your so sure its wrong
But any degree of certainty is out the window
All for a girl you destroy your world without hesitation
For crimson lip and caramel eye you push the button on tomorrow
Someday someone will follow in the footsteps you have hollowed
You'll be so badly disappointed
You know that someone somewhere in this stupid world will care
I hate to have to promise this, but it won't be her
Lock yourself into your little room and die
