"Red Sam" as written by Lacey Nicole Sturm, James Culpepper, Kirkpatrick Seals, Jared Hartmann, Sameer Bhattacharya and William Hoffman....
Here I stand
Empty hands
Wishing my wrists were bleeding
To stop the pain from the beatings

There you stood
Holding me
Waiting for me to notice you

But who are you
You are the truth (you are the truth)
Out screaming these lies
You are the truth (you are the truth)
Saving my life

The warmth of your embrace
Melts my frostbitten spirit
You speak the truth and I hear it
The words are I love you
And I have to believe in you

But who are you
You are the truth (you are the truth)
Out screaming these lies
You are the truth (you are the truth)
Saving my life

My hands are open
And you are filling them
Hands in the air
In the air, in the air, in the air

And I worship
And I worship
And I worship
And I worship

You are the truth (you are the truth)
Out screaming these lies
You are the truth (you are the truth)
Saving my life

General CommentGuys, I see a lot of you trying to make this song worldly and try and make it so that its not about God, but honestly, that's not possible. You can't make this song not about a God encounter. John 14:6 "I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life." All of it relates, and I see you guys trying to make it about a boyfriend or something and I try not to laugh. I mean, "And I worship?" Yeah, I'm sure that she worships her boyfriend.

General CommentWell this song was defiantly about a connection with God, however it was not the connection between Lacey (Flyleaf's lead singer) and God. What I heard was that, while on tour, a girl walked up to Lacy and she was basically burned down. She (as I read somewhere) had no hair and her ears and nose were burned off, well I don't want to make it something it wasn't so let me just say this is what I remember. Anyway she practically came up to Lacy and said she wanted to share her story. Like most women her dream was to fall in love and get married and be happy. After a while her marriage went, not as planned. They started arguing a lot and soon enough her husband started to beat her. It wasn't long before this girl had started thinking about suicide, and one day she covered herself in kerosene and lighted a match. It was while she was in a corner burning she prayed to God and basically said, "you haven't helped me all this time, so if you do exist and you do care, help me now." She went into a coma but lived and in her perspective it WAS God who had saved her. Because Flyleaf is a christian rock band, she told Lacey this as a way of saying that God does care and suicide is not the answer because some people do have it worse. It's hard to explain but in a way she was saying like Lacey, she did connect to God and she knows how Lacey feels (Lacey also had some problems as a child). For that reason this is one of my favorite songs in the album.

General Comment"It's kinda personal, some of the stuff about it. But its really just about how I got saved, how I got like, I don't know... I guess when I was 16, before that I was Atheist, and then I had all these things. Like I was really just kinda studying to figure out what the truth was, I guess. Then my grandpa was really, well he was having a heart attack at that time, like his 12th heart attack that he had. So I was really upset, and it was like right about that time when I guess God brought me to a place where I didn't have anything or anybody and it was the only way that I was ever going to look up and see that the only thing constant and the only thing I could depend on was God. And that's when all these supernatural things happened, and he like showed me that he was real and that he really loved me and that he wanted to do something different with my life and thats why I was alive. And so thats when I got saved. And that's kinda what that's about."

General Commentthis song is defiently about her connection with God, and how when he says "he loves her" she has to believe it because he is the truth through all the lies.
((even while wishing she had a set of bloody wrists, he still calls out to her, and he IS the truth))

    what an amazing song!

General CommentHere's what I think..i'm going very indepth even tho i could sum it up in a nut shell. I just adore this song

    "Here I stand
    Empty hands
    Wishing my wrists were bleeding
To stop the pain from the beatings"

She was abused by her mother and very depressed and feels like she has nothing (she's without God at this point.) She wants to kill herself to stop the pain.

    "There you stood
    Holding me
Waiting for me to notice you

    But who are you
You are the truth (you are the truth)
    Outscreaming these lies
You are the truth (you are the truth)
    Saving my life"

She realises that God was there waiting for her to notice Him so He can stop the pain. She realises that He's the truth saving her from killing herself.

    "The warmth of your embrace
    Melts my frostbitten spirit
You speak the truth and I hear it
The words are I love you
And I have to believe in you"

She starts believing in God and that He loves her and that feels good to her.

    "My hands are open
    And you are filling them
    Hands in the air
In the air, in the air, in the air

    And I worship
    And I worship
    And I worship
    And I worship"

She worships God now and lets Him in her life and now fills her previously empty hands and makes them full

General CommentThe Song "Red Sam" comes from two of the band member's names. Its from Jared Hartmann (Guitar), and Sameer Bhattacharya (Guitar). Its the last part of Jared's name, and the first of Sameers. If you want more, check out: flyleafonline.com/.
This song to me is special. Why is because it makes me realize I am not the only one, that someone is always there for me when I feel horrible.

My InterpretationRed Sam is about Lacey's love for God and Jesus.

    "There you stood
    Holding me
Waiting for me to notice you." - There Jesus stood holding Lacey waiting for her to notice Him and that He was the way, the right path this whole time.

    "But who are you
You are the truth (you are the truth)
    Outscreaming these lies
You are the truth (you are the truth)
Saving my life." = Lacey asking Him "Who are you?" and Jesus replies "I am the Truth, pushing away all the lies with my voice." (He didn't really say that this is just a reenactment.) And now Lacey (years later after she has been saved) "You are the truth and You saved my life!" She's thanking Him.

    "The warmth of your embrace
    Melts my frostbitten spirit
You speak the truth and I hear it
The words are I love you
And I have to believe in you." = The warmth of Jesus' presence is melting the cold bitterness inside and is making it a warm feeling. He is speaking the truth and she is hearing it. She believes in Him.

    "My hands are open
    And you are filling them
    Hands in the air
In the air, in the air, in the air

    And I worship
    And I worship
    And I worship

You!" = Lacey's hands are open and outstretched and He is filling them up. Lacey is worshiping Jesus!

(And the reason why It is called "Red Sam" is because Jared and Sameer wrote this song and their names together is jaRED+SAMeer!)
