"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
My hands are searching for You
My arms are outstretched towards You
I feel you on my fingertips
My tongue dances behind my lips for You
This fire runs in through my being
Burning, I'm not used to seeing You
I'm alive, I'm alive
I can feel You all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing
My hands float up above me
And You whisper you love me
And I begin to fade
Into our secret place
The music makes me sway
The angels singing say, "We are alone with you"
I am alone and they are too with You
I'm alive, I'm alive
I can feel You all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing
And so I cry (holy)
The light is white (holy)
And I see You
I'm alive (I'm alive), I'm alive (I'm alive), I'm alive
I can feel you all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing
Take my hand, I give it to you
Now You own me, all I am
You said You would never leave me
I believe You, I believe
I can feel You all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healed
My arms are outstretched towards You
I feel you on my fingertips
My tongue dances behind my lips for You
This fire runs in through my being
Burning, I'm not used to seeing You
I'm alive, I'm alive
I can feel You all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing

And I begin to fade
Into our secret place
The music makes me sway
The angels singing say, "We are alone with you"
I am alone and they are too with You
I'm alive, I'm alive
I can feel You all around me
Thickening the air I'm breathing
Holding on to what I'm feeling
Savoring this heart that's healing

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
The meaning of this song is about her relationship in God.
"My tongue dances behind my lips for you"
That doesn't mean that it is perverted to relate that to God. If you are going to take this on a litteral sense then how does a love song relate when she says
"And so I cry The light is white And I see you I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive"
That is talking about her in heaven. It's only then when she is really alive. She has made it to the place she has always wanted to be. Everything is perfect.
"My hands float up above me And you whisper you love me And I begin to fade Into our secret place"
That is talking about praise and worship. People raise their hands in praise. Most prayers contain some sense of love for God. Also, in prayer most people fade into their secret place where it is only the connection of them and God.
PLUS, lets think about this-- Flyleaf is a Christian rock band therefore I am pretty sure this is a song about God. You may think its a love song but it may just be her love for Jesus Christ.
This song is totally about God.
Yeah, now I see it! I completely agree!!
"My tongue dances behind my lips for you" can be related to speaking in tongues because it's the Holy ghost inside of you
"And so I cry<br /> The light is white<br /> And I see you<br /> I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive"<br /> <br /> That is talking about her in heaven. It's only then when she is really alive. She has made it to the place she has always wanted to be. Everything is perfect.<br /> ----<br /> Have you ever been in love? i mean not with god... you know sometimes ppl say it feels like heaven... but you might have missed when they mentioned how love feels like... <br /> <br /> Personally I think it's a love song written for someone (who's actually alive) she loves. <br /> "My hands float up above me<br /> And you whisper you love me<br /> And I begin to fade<br /> Into our secret place"<br /> <br /> yeah it can mean praying but when you're a non-believer lifting up you hands (especially when you're laying on your bed) means you feel free, you're totally satisfied, you can reach everything. and when he says he loves her the most beautifull words for someone who's in love with the speaker, she disappear into heaven with him.<br /> <br /> Take my hand<br /> I give it to you<br /> Now you owe me<br /> All I am<br /> You said you would never leave me<br /> I believe you<br /> I believe<br /> <br /> i think it's obvious. I met someone , fall in love, he said him too, i give my hand and with it i give my everything, he promised he would't leave me, and so on.<br /> <br /> And just because they're a christian band, they can't sing about the most beautiful human feeling, about love (between ppl)? <br /> Yeah it can be about god, but it can be about a simplier thing.<br /> Yeah, yeah i know you christians see god everywhere, but i don't, so just let me listen to it without thinking about sth i don't believe in.
Well... since they ARE a Christian band. <br /> and they do sing about Christian related stuff...<br /> AND pretty much ALL of their songs are Christain songs... <br /> PLUS the lyrics say <br /> "The angels singing say we are alone with you<br /> I am alone and they are too with you" <br /> Obviously a blunt lyric.<br /> <br /> Yea... definitely talking about praise and worship... and GOD... and all that good stuff... I mean... its pretty obvious...
mnieove, honnybee the only thing i can say, that i know that they're a christian band. they do sing about god and christian stuff. but not all the time. and it's a fact. (see Treasure, that song is surely about her engagement, though could be god.... but noooo SHE said that's about the night she was proposed). Anyway love, friendship and other things can be related to christians but also to buddha, to atheists and so on to ANY religion. and if they want their songs to reach everyone(and they do), they let ppl to interpret there song as they want. I don't say this song's about something awful. I say it's about LOVE not GOD. does it hurt anyone? you had an oppinion i had another. and just because i'm so nice i explain you the angel stuff in my point of view:) so you're in love with a real person. there are just you two. you feel so happy that heaven had to come down to the earth (moreover if you believe in god), and angel sent you this moment, they just make everything's alright around. it's poetry. and a very nice picture, heaven, angels and two lovers. <br /> Maybe this song is not about it for you, and i CAN, i am able to accept that. <br /> BUT for me that's what this song is about. that's what obvious to me.
But, why does Flyleaf perform this song, and how do they interpret it; putting all of the lyrics together the way they do?
@downforbreakfast My first thought was that she's talking about speaking in tongues but really I think it's a reference to silent prayer.
