Tell me that you love me even if it's fake
Shawty I don't wanna play no games
Tell me that you love me even if it's fake
Shawty I don't wanna play no games
Yeah, don't you ever play with my mind?
Thinking 'bout you up all night
Up all night, yeah
I cannot leave, I cannot leave you
(Tell me that you love me, baby)
Tell me that you love me even if it's fake
Shawty I don't wanna play no games
Tell me that you love me even if it's fake
Shawty I don't wanna play no games

"If you ain't sweet to me, I'll dessert you in a heartbeat"

couldn't you take this literally, such as, if you aren't good to me, then i'll leave you.

"If you don't savor me, I'll salt you, make you savory"

if you don't savor me, i'm going to make you savor me.

Just gonna retype them all from the liner notes:

well if the clothes make the man then the moths make the holes and it shows yes it shows by the shape the hole grows

ooohhoh so if early man really did mate with neanderthal then modern man is a mix of beastial sex ooh oooh

if you ain't sweet to me i'll dessert you in a heartbeat if you don't savour me i'll salt you make you savoury

if the boy keeps hitting his head against the dash of the car will the horsefly leave his ear or will the blood make it hard?

if you ain't sweet to me...

if sequencing genes brings them back to breed will we get along with them?

if you ain't sweet to me...

when the sky finally falls if you're holding me I can die finally knowing it ends peacefully.

This song reminds me of the random thoughts that occur to you when you're daydreaming, but it has a sort of sinister side to it. The second and fourth verses seem to go together. I feel like there's something I'm not getting though.

hey J___P, don't be an asswipe. "turns you off"? well, you must have really monolithic and immature views on things like sex, even in the context where its not trying to be sexual at all. because it's not advocating sex with apes; it's talking about where "modern man" came from. honestly, i dont know why you are even listening to Islands. i think the new nelly single on the radio or something would be more your speed.

when i first heard this song, i literally stopped what i was doing to listen to it. the lyrics are amazing, and like "wrapid" said, it really does feel like your own thoughts.

There are hints in this song of the recurring theme of cannabalism on this whole album. The world is coming to an end, the food supply is running out, so we have to eat each other.

    For instance:

"If you ain't sweet to me, I'll dessert you in a heartbeat"

The double-entendre of "dessert" as a sweet food, as in "if you're not nice to me, I'll have you for dessert".

    And

"If you don't savor me, I'll salt you, make you savory""

says to me "if you don't appreciate me, I'll kill you and salt your flesh to make it taste better"

Or it could mean if you die first, I get to eat you. If I die first, you get to eat me.

    Pretty creepy stuff either way...

interesting opinions about this song. whatever "if you ain't sweet to me, i'll dessert you in a heartbeat, if you don't savour me, i'll salt you make you savoury" may mean...i just love it. it's clever one way or the other and even if it's morbid, i find it endearing..

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
