My yesterdays are all boxed up and neatly put away
But every now and then you come to mind
'Cause you were always waiting to be picked to play the game
But when your name was called, you found a place to hide
When you knew that I was always on your side

Well everything was easy then, so sweet and innocent
But your demons and your angels reappeared
Leavin' all the traces of the man you thought you'd be
Leavin' me with no place left to go from here
Leavin' me so many questions all these years

But is there someplace far away, someplace where all is clear
Easy to start over with the ones you hold so dear
Or are you left to wonder, all alone, eternally
This isn't how it's really meant to be
No it isn't how it's really meant to be

Well they say that love is in the air, but never is it clear,
How to pull it close and make it stay
Butterflies are free to fly, and so they fly away
And I'm left to carry on and wonder why
Even through it all, I'm always on your side

But is there someplace far away, someplace where all is clear
Easy to start over with the ones you hold so dear
Or are we left to wonder, all alone, eternally
But is this how it's really meant to be
No is it how it's really meant to be

Well if they say that love is in the air, never is it clear
How to pull it close and make it stay
If butterflies are free to fly, why do they fly away
Leavin' me to carry on and wonder why
Was it you that kept me wondering through this life
When you know that I was always on your side

General Comment:musiecalin's absolutey rite..i heard somewhere that Sheryl wrote this song for Lance when they broke up...and i dunno if its just me but as someone who's not a huge fan of either of them but respect them as human beings for all that they are, all that they do, and the people we can see them for...I'm gonna go on a limb and say that the of them meeting did wonders for each of them and its just sad that it could not be..

General Comment:This is a very sweet song. I think the song is about a couple (or, ex-couple) that maybe don't still have romantic feelings for each other (or maybe they do), but just wish that they could've treated each other better. Explaining why they each made it hard for the relationship to work.
I think Sting and Sheryl sound great together. Perfect people to sing this song.
    It's very pretty.. I like it! :D

General Comment:I think this song is about how your life changes after a breakup. There is always a question of whether this is how it is meant to be, but you also know that if that person meant a lot to you that they will always be part of you somehow.

General Comment:i love this song. it best describes what i feel for my first love who left me with so many questions. and even though now we both have taken different roads, he knows that i'm always on his "side." though we are thousands of miles away from each other. he knows that i'm just a phone call away.

General Comment:I think she's trying to say that this guy *cough* Lance *cough* promised her the world but when push came to shove, he was just full of it and didn't stand by her like he promised. the line,

"Butterflies are free to fly, and so they fly away And I'm left to carry on and wonder why"

Makes me think that he left her for another woman, or just left her. As the song goes on she also begins to doubt herself. In the first verse she says:

"This isn't how it's really meant to be
No it isn't how it's really meant to be"

It's almost like she's trying to convince herself. Then she says:

"But is this how it's really meant to be
No is it how it's really meant to be"

Now it's like she's questioning it and wondering if she'll ever find love again. It's a touching song and I love it.

General Comment:in my eyes, is doesn't have to be about a romantic relatioship - even though it was written about one. To me, it's about someone close who died or is very ill and close to dying, and the main in wondering how they can go on without this person. Like, "this isn't how it's really meant to be" is where she's wondering if that person wasn't supposed to die. That this wasn't what was supposed to happen. I love this song. So beautiful.

General Comment:I guess I have a different take on this song that just about everyone else. I think it's coming from a different place. To me, this speaks of someone who has recently (or not so recently) become single, and there was one guy in her past that she keeps being drawn back to, but he's not the man either one of them thought he would be, and they can't make it work. He was the one who was always waiting for her to pick him, but he can't be her lover now, and no one can figure out how it's all supposed to work out.

Memory:this song will always hold a great meaning for me. i've always interpreted it as quite simply, they are "the one that got away" to each other. wrong place and time to make it work. j, where ever you are... you came into my life so quickly and set my heart on fire, then drifted in and out from time to time, then came back, but it was just too late. but the imprints you left on my heart will last a life time. i have moved on and far away in my life, but like the song says "every now and then, you come to mind". i know you will never see this, but somewhere... here... there is someone who will hold a dear love and fond memories, buried deep in my heart that will last a lifetime and beyond. wishing you all the love and happiness there is...

General Comment:Great song. I agree it seems to be about a breakup. But it's sort of a sweet breakup.

Crow seems to be content with it at the end. Sting represents the male breakupper. I have a version where she is just singing alone so this was maybe added later for effect. Breakups are hard even on celebrities I guess. Crow seems in tune with this.
