I turned you down so hastily
And it’s tearing me apart
In my heart of hearts I’m screaming
In my heart of hearts I cry
And it’s cold
So cold

I turned you down
Oh, I turned you down so thoughtlessly
And it’s tearing me apart
In my heart of hearts I’m screaming
In my heart of hearts I cry
How I wish you told me that

I wish you’d told me that before
I wish you’d told me that before
I wish you’d told me that before

I turned you down

My InterpretationSeems like he's made a terrible mistake by separating from someone who had been close to him previously.

Somehow it brings to me a thought of a relationship in which the guy realises that it is not what he needs and what he seeks in life. But when he tells his girlfriend that he's leaving, she tells him something important, perhaps that she is expecting a child (his child!) and this changes the whole perspective to him. Still what's been said has been said and now it causes a lot of pain to both of them.

Song MeaningMy thoughts are similar to the other comment, but different in that I think the other comment is being too specific. The writer brings no indication that there may be any kind of child involved here lyrics-wise, and seeing that the tone of the actual song itself consists of long, heavy, almost dreary rifts...The last thing that comes to mind is a child. Children signal innocence, which honestly isn't a common theme associated with progressive rock or metal.

Much more likely this song has to do with simply the angst of breaking up with a significant other but still nonetheless regretting it. How do I know? Well, most of us have been in that kind of situation, haven't we? We know for a fact that rationally we made the right choice but still go through different scenarios in our mind which could have made things right and perfect. (Thus this song.) Reasons people provide as excuses for breaking up are hardly ever things that couldn't have been rectified, and we focus on what we could have done rather than accept some things are outside our control...It drives us literally out of our minds.

Well, certainly explains the song's psychedelic nature doesn't it...
