"Fantasy" as written by and Billy Joel....
City nights
Summer breezes makes you feel all right
Shining brightly make your brain ignite

See the girls with the dresses so tight
Give you love, if the price is right
Black or white
In the streets there's no wrong and no right

Outta site
Buy your kicks from the man in the white
Feels all right
Powder pleasure in your nose tonight

See the men paint their faces and cry
Like some girl, it makes you wonder why
City life
Sure is cool, but it cuts like a knife
It's your life

So forget all that you see
It's not reality, it's just a fantasy

Can't you see what this crazy life is doin' to me

Life is just a fantasy
Can you live this fantasy life
Life is just a fantasy
Can you live this fantasy life

General CommentI think its just a poetic way of decribing the hard partying lifestyle; which really isnt real life anyway, just a fantasy world

General CommentIn the early 80's when this song came out, this song got lots of radio play. Aldo Nova is from Montreal, I believe, and based on what I read of him, after this song made him a rock star, he partied it up hard, similar to the things mentioned in the Fantasy lyrics.

But aside from that, this song is a classic 80's style power ballad, with heavy duty guitars ranging from distortion through to screaming frenzy during the solo parts. The themes remind me of the 80's movie Scarface, which is also tied to that time frame, with similar themes of pleasure.

Drugs, excess, sex, self-indulgence... driving themes of 80's pop culture and this song got in at the ground floor.

But for all that, when I was a kid in high school, this song was just cool to listen to. And hearing it now, its still a quick trip back to simpler times, when there was still the thrill of imagining all the things that one could be and do, and the heights to which one could rise.

General CommentI've never heard anything about Nova "partying it up hard"; he lost popularity because his second album was a more experimental effort instead of a carbon-copy of his first like the record company wanted.

Awesome song, and the rest of the album was great too. Very underrated artist who should have had more hits.

General CommentI believe this song is about a person's experience while they're high on coke...thus the lyrics about "buying your kicks from the man in the white" and then later, "powder pleasure in your nose tonight".

That's why the whole thing is just a fantasy, because it's cocaine induced.

General CommentListen to this, then listen to Jefferson Starship's "Jane." Or, listen to Jane first, then listen to this. I think you will notice some similarities in the songs - just something I noticed today.

General CommentThis guy is wondering that if what we call life is really just a dream that we can't wake up from, kinda like the Matrix.
