"Girl America" as written by Mathew Kearney and Robert L. Marvin....
My girl America is just a youth in this world
Her smile is more precious than the sparkle of pearls
And though her age reads she's just a young girl
Age behind her eyes show the pain that she's swirled
Through the hand that's been dealt though it's quiet as kept
The weight was all felt last night when she slept
And as she crept into the dreams of the things of her past
Seems to have grown so fast, way beyond her own class
Though they're right there with her, hers brothers and her sisters
A natural born leader even when her peers diss her
My girl, she's at a crossroads, people praying for her
Some are preying on her magazine ads, sex, drama, smoking marijuana
Longing for a father to call her 'daughter'
She's part of a generation longing for reconciliation
And this future that they're facing and this poison that they're tasting
My girl, I know this love that you're chasing

My girl America's crying when she's lying on her bed at night
I can see that she's screaming when she's dreaming for her freedom
My girl America's dying while she's trying just to stop this fight
Don't stop believing, my girl America

Boys with hungry eyes have been beating her door
Telling her that's what's she's for, trying to rob her at her core
Then leave calling her a whore, but still she knows there's more
I know she knows there's more because there's a voice she can't ignore
Cause it was founded in the foundations, from the day of her creation
In God we trust engraved in the treasures of her nation
And the void the boys can't fill
With the tippin' of the bottle or the poppin' of the pill
But still most of her friends don't care as they glare
Ready to drown the funnel as they frown down the tunnel
They stumble and they tumble, breaking down into rubble
My girl America, stop, can't you see
It's not the circumstances that determine who you're gonna be
But how you deal with these problems and pains that come your way
It's for you that I pray with hope for a brighter day
So I say, your deliverance is comin'

My girl America's crying when she's lying on her bed at night
I can see that she's screaming when she's dreaming for her freedom
My girl America's dying while she's trying just to stop this fight
Don't stop believing, my girl America

Faith like a child from your first birth
You left it in the dirt on your worst hurt
And I see each tear and every scar
The hands that have held you where you are
And I can see we've strayed so far
A king born under that morning star
As a crown of thorns was placed to erase
Each tear that's touched your face
His palms and sides were pierced with spears
He hung in love just to draw you near
My girl, out of this whole world
Can't you see this is where we started

My girl America's crying when she's lying on her bed at night
I can see that she's screaming when she's dreaming for her freedom
My girl America's dying while she's trying just to stop this fight
Don't stop believing, my girl America

My girl America's crying when she's lying on her bed at night
I can see that she's screaming when she's dreaming for her freedom
My girl America's dying while she's trying just to stop this fight
Don't stop believing, my girl America

His palms and sides were pierced with spears
He hung in love just to draw you near
My girl, out of this whole world
Can't you see this is where we started
Where we started, where we started, my girl America

General CommentI agree with ScottyT..this is a brilliant song...i loved his album Bullet. There was not a song on the album that i didnt enjoy...i love his voice and how he speaks up about issues that need to be adressed...in particular, Tomorrow...the comment he made in that song was awesome. As for this song...I have interpreted it more metaphorically than jasonjames88...not to disregard his idea on the meaning, by all means, his is also quite true. I see 'Girl America' as america, the country, itself...now, i'm not and american..im australian, so my point of view will be different....but the way i see it, calling it 'girl' shows a certain tenderness and love..fatherly love. I think Mat is saying how he loves the country, but is devistated about the corruption in it...thinking about it..America is a reasonably young country...it has been through a lot...they dont teach us american history here...only values...but it goes without saying..America had a well documented and extensive history...this is the 'age behind her eyes'. 'Natural born leader' we all rekon america is the super power of the world...so fair comment there...Kearney speaks of the corruption in more specific terms...such as pornography, drugs, the media and so forth. Basically the song is a shout out to all those americans who are struggling with their faith...he's saying that in this world of temptation there are brighter days ahead and that it is truly noble to hold onto ur standars and beliefs..
"It's not the circumstances that determine who you're gonna be
But how you deal with these problems and pains that come your way "
I love those lines...so true. The final verse is just beautiful....the thought provoking imagery is spectacular...

General Comment1.) in a round about way this song shows how much girls need to respect themselves... even if put in a bad situation (i.e. no father, no mother) i often observe when young girls miss the fatherly figure that every girl needs as a young girl they tend to "stray off to a worse path" GIRLS RESPECT YOURSELF..you are more important than any one nighter with some selfish guy....

2.) there is hope even without a fatherly figure because God has given his life for you to be saved...he sacrificed for you to have eternal life..how can anyone say there is no hope

General Comment"In God we trust engraved in the treasures of her nation", "A natural born leader even when her peers diss her" This indeed talks about America as a nation, and not one girl.

General CommentThis song reminds me of 1 Corinthians 10:13... about all the tempatations in the world that may lead us astray..or as Kearney puts it : "the circumstances"..and that, through the sacrifice of Jesus, we have an escape...it's up to us to decide: "But how you deal with these problems and pains that come your way"...that define who we are.

General Commenti dont think its about one girl, and i dont think its just about america either. i think its about all the girls in america. it talks about all the things girls are faced with, and how girls arent appreciated as much as they should be, in a way. the line about "in God we trust" i think is talking about America. but for the most part its talking about all the girls in america being used and such.

General CommentLibby18, you made a great point about this song that I've never realized. I've always seen it as the song that is about the average American girl. I guess the song can go both ways, but I tend to think it has a little more to do with the individual girl rather than the nation. I also agree that this song is brilliant and I really like how honest this song is. He sings about issues that are hear and are everywhere. I think it is simply about a girl just trying to figure out who she is and who just wants to be accepted. At least that's how I've always sensed it, partially because I've been there and am still dealing with some of these issues.
I think the most promising part of this song is the last verse. I am a Christian and I believe that this part of the song can even be inspiring to those who are not Christians. It reassures that even if it seems like no one loves you, God always does, and He always will.

General CommentThis song was probably inspired by the issues Mat Kearney faced when he was a youth pastor (before going to full-time songwriting). It's about the state of the youth in the U.S., particularly girls, and what the pop culture throws at them on a daily basis.

General CommentI think it's about America as a country. About our society and our great need for a Savior...that's my opinion. I agree with somecrazygeek@.
