"The Very Thing" as written by Amy E Millan, Torquil John Campbell, Christopher Allen Seligman, Evan Whitney Cranley and Patrick Mcgee....
The bar closes early on the Sabbath day
So me and my kid we hit the park to play
Then it'd start to rain so we walk home again
He asked why he was born
I don't know what to say

I don't feel guilty and I don't feel sad
This motherfucking life is the best he's had
I said I've been there, sonny, and it ain't that bad
I took my hits from the shits back when I was a lad

So long ago and even though I tried
I couldn't make him see
The life that he had cast in front of me
And even though I cried
I couldn't make him be the very thing I needed

His mother would make a scene when I come home late
She looked like she's dying and she's 28
I never loved that whore, I never will no more
Except for a month back in '84
The jam was playing and my heart stood still
Gazing at a shadow on the window sill

So long ago and even though I tried
I couldn't make her see
I wasn't quite the man she thought I'd be
And even though I cried
I couldn't make her be the very thing I needed

And even though I tried
I couldn't make her see
I wasn't quite the man she thought I'd be
And even though I cried
I couldn't make her be the very thing I needed

Could she be the very thing I needed?
Could she be the very thing
The very thing

Push yourself away from your one best friend
Who's going to love you when you reach the end?
Who will?
Who will?
Who will?

General CommentActually, I think you guys have it backwards. It's about a guy trying to cope with the fact that his life with the woman he knocked up and their child ain't cutting it and Amy's vocals at the end are the woman in the relationship telling him that if he leaves them, the guilt will make it so that no one will ever be able to love him.

General CommentCan't beleive there arent any comments already.
To me its the kind of settling for second best, and making concessions on your ambitions or expectations.

General CommentThis is my favorite song by stars, with one more night coming in second. Sad song, sounds like he's stuck with a kid after leaving his wife and he's not enjoying it. The kid and his ex-wife were supposed to be the things that complete his life but didn't. The ending vocals by Milan are so good.

Push yourself away from your one best friend
Who's going to love you when you reach the end?

    I'm guessing he's referring to his ex-wife.

General Commentmook hit it right on the head. The end vocals really drive it home For anyone who's had to let go of hir or her best friend. You know what you're doing is right, but you can't help but question your decision and wonder what's going to happen next.

One of the very best Stars songs in my opinion.

General CommentCurrently my favorite Stars track. I have to disagree with Bluemask simply because the chorus states he "couldn't make her see" and that he wasn't the man she thought he'd be. So that obviously refers to the idea that she was the one that left him.

The child asks why he was born probably out of spite, living a life with divorced parents isn't every childs dream.

I think Amy's closing comments refers to her Ex's current state of barreness; like she's a bit sympathetic to the desolate life he lives.

General Commentit's about a guy who couldn't appreciate or see the grace in his life. He has a kid and a wife that loves him, but he couldnt see them as the very thing he needed.

he abandones his child, for he always go to bar, and only spends time with his kid when he coulcn't go to bar. the kid sees it like a love delusion... a fake one, just when he's about to have fun w his dad (finaly) and then it rains...

    ironic...

so on...he wasted his wife, wasted his kid..his wife went..and suddenly he just realize her meaning to her..
sometimes you don't know what you have until you lose it..

General CommentI always thought it was just a guy unhappy with the life he has. Kinda what Bluemask said "I never loved that whore, I never will no more... Except for a month back in '84" I think really emphasizes it. He knocked her up and had to marry, and now he regrets it. But, this is the best he's got now, so if he does push them away, there's no one else there. Pretty sad.

This was actually the first Stars song I ever heard, and I'm so happy I did, because now they've been my favorite band for a little over a year and I have every single one of their songs. This is still my all time favorite, though, One More Night comes in close 2nd.

General CommentThis song is one of my all-time favourites of Stars. I love the story it depicts... even if it is a bit sad. The beginning definitely shows that he's not happy with his current situation... He does love his kid, because he 'cast a light in front of him', but maybe he just can't find a way to connect with the child... He couldn't make him see. And the situation with the wife... it does sound like they got together because of a surprise pregnancy. But in the end, she is the only one who will love him... Some feelings still remain because they've spent so much time together.

General Commenti think the song is about having a positive perspective on what may seem like a bad situation.
he loved his girlfriend, he knocked her up...put them in a shitty situation because they werent ready for marriage nevermind a baby.
obviously it didnt work out becuase he didnt try to make it work or appreciate his wife so she ends up leaving him and he makes it so it seem like she is the bitter person.
he only takes his kid out when the bar is closed, he doesnt appreciate his child but when the child questions his existance it sheds light to him eventuallt that the child shouldnt be a burden but is a gift and so was the childs mother. you basically never realize what you have and its significance until its gone.
