"How High" as written by and Pontus Winnberg Christian Karlsson....
How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?

It's funny
I spent my whole life
Wanting to be talked about
I did it
Just about everything
To see my name in lights

Was it all worth it?
And how did I earn it?
Nobody's perfect
I guess I deserved it

How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
Does this get any better?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I'm gone?
Will any of this matter?

It's funny
How everybody mentions my name
But they're never very nice
I took it
Just about everything
Except my own advice

Was it all worth it?
How did I earn it?
Nobody's perfect
I guess I deserved it

How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
Nothing lasts forever
Does this get any better?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I'm gone?
Does it make a difference?
Will any of this matter?

How high?
Does it make a difference?
Nothing lasts forever
Should I?
Will it matter when I'm gone?
Will any of this matter?

How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I'm gone?

How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
Does this get any better?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I'm gone?
Will any of this matter?

How high are the stakes?
Does it make a difference?
Nothing lasts forever
Does this get any better?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I'm gone?
Does it make a difference?
Will any of this matter?

How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I'm gone?

How high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I'm gone?

General CommentStefanKras, I disagree and agree with some of your statements. First of all I disagree with your comment about her lyrics. I think that a lot of people, even her fans, take her lyrics just at face value or the messages in her songs are sterilized by the environment in which they are played (i.e clubs, etc). I also believe that because Madonna is such a visual artist and her own interpretations of her work are so strong, it sort of gets in the way for people to use their own imaginations to determine what the work means for themselves. Overall, it is sort of a blessing and a curse for Madonna because by doing so it sort of simplifies the messages in her music for fans aka her interpretation is the only interp.

I'm not generally speaking for all people, but as a huge fan, it's just something I've noticed when talking with others about her work.

MemoryIn the Ciccone question How High? Madonna Cries ABOUT HER OWN EXISTENCE! She Cries because she just wants to be loved for who she really is-a humanitarian rocker and not a celebrity! Her Detractors Aren't nice to her because Madonna just Cries in Sadness and Brilliance!!

This song is one of my favorites on this album. Its such a hot track with meaningful lyrics. The song is obviously about wanting so much in your life, like material things, and realizing that they arent important because those material things wont matter in the end. I love it sooo much.

General CommentMadonna has become a worldwide superstar through her music, videos and charismatic personality, but not because of many meaningful song lyrics. It is only since her 'Bedtimes Stories' cd that one occasionally comes across songs in which she is actually trying to say something. But overall Madonna's lyrics are much less important than all the rest – even on American Life.

Songs like 'How High' are among the very few in which Madonna's lyrics equals her music. Madonna is an ice queen. I've seen her on stage in Amsterdam, insulting the audience and walking away whithout dignifying herself to give an encore – and in this convincing song about Fame, she's singing: "It's funny, how everybody mentions my name. They're never very nice". I don't believe for a second that she would have been a nicer person would she not have become a superstar, but the fear this sentence conveys is very real and genuine. In this context, the punchline "Will it matter when I'm gone?" has meaning – Madonna's obviously singing about death, but also about the possible end of her career which may arrive as soon as she brings out a couple of non-selling records. In this respect, her bringing out "Confessions on a dance floor" just after "American Life" is significant. American Life was an excellent record, but didn't sell. Confessions is her answer to the question "Will it matter when I'm gone?". Her answer is: "I definitely don't want to find out just yet!"

General CommentThis is definitely one of my favorite on the CoaDF album. It's basically about Madonna wondering whether or not everything she's done to become famous and stay famous has been worth it, especially since "nothing lasts forever".

General CommentWhy do people keep saying "ONE OF MY FAVOURITE". Yeah. Predictable. I don't like COADF that much, but this is definitely my FAVOURITE.
