So now you're suffering the fallacy of what you said
When you uncover the depression from where you've tread
Breathe over the glass you wrote on
Swallow all that you waste your throat on
You wear the mark and wave the banner they made with sin
Revealing every single lie that you've been breeding within
Wash over the skin you've broken
Think over the tone you spoke in

So lost in your affliction / addiction
The solemn comfort of your grave
If you close your eyes the light can't take it away

Not I - I won't conform to what I see in you
Not I - I won't surrender what I am
Not I - And even if it was a part of me
Not I - I'll never be that way again

The blind will follow on the path that you created in vain
No guiding light, but just the shadow of the dead will remain
Dig open the pain you're hiding
Give your hand to the faith you're fighting
The void you suffer is a curse forever bleeding inside
Now you embrace the fatal sickness you should despise
Remember the day you lost that
Where is the shame that will bring your soul back

So lost in your affliction / addiction
The solemn comfort of your grave
If you close your eyes the light can't take it away

Not I - I won't conform to what I see in you
Not I - I won't surrender what I am
Not I - And even if it was a part of me
Not I - I'll never be that way again

Reach back behind your pride
And pull the thorn from the burning pain in your side

Sing me a new song
A broken song of redemption and regret
Sing me a new song
And beg for all the mercy you can get

Not I - I won't conform to what I see in you
Not I - I won't surrender what I am
Not I - And even if it was a part of me
Not I - I'll never be that way again

This song, "Not I", is about a Christian who is either backslidden or afraid/embarassed to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, or live a life that shows that shows Him as such.

"Remember the day you lost that Where is the shame that will bring your soul back?" Because the line is specific in mentioning "bring your soul BACK", it shows that the person is already Christian but has backslidden.

"The solemn comfort of your grave" It is extremely easy to live in sin, but very difficult to live for Christ, as Jesus states that we will be persecuted for his name's sake.

"If you close your eyes the light can’t take it away" It is easy to stray from God. Something so simple and easy as closing your eyes can prevent your return to God, which is an incredible line by Demon Hunter. God will not forcedly pull you back towards Him, rather, He leaves the desicion totally up to you.

"The blind will follow on the path that you created in vain" Whether you realize it or not, people observe the behaviour of other people and sometimes model there own life after the example given. The non-believers will follow the example of straying from God that you have exhibited.

"Not I - I won’t conform to what I see in you Not I - I won’t surrender what I am Not I - And even if it was a part of me Not I - I’ll never be that way again" Not I, I won't be that backslidden Christian to do all these things--straying from God, leading others away from God, fighting salvation...

"Reach back behind your pride And pull the thorn from the burning pain in your side" If you follow the world, you will be liked of the world, whereas the case would be vice versa if you followed Christ instead. If you are liked by many people in the world, then some form of pride will build up. The line also mentions "the BURNING pain in your side." Why would someone need to be told to remove a thorn if it caused you pain? I believe that the most miserable man is a man that has drifted away from God. The thorn represents the world, the Devil, how it has infected you. Yes, the thorn burns, but if you get rid of it and follow Jesus, people will ridicule you as according to His word. Many people are too weak or embarrassed to be bold for Christ and take the persecution of the world for His name.

"Sing me a new song A broken song of redemption and regret Sing me a new song And beg for all the mercy you can get" You must repent if you desire to go to Heaven. The "Broken Song" is the repentance, expressing your regret for what you have done and asking for redemption.

"Beg for all the mercy you can get" This line is a very harsh line, saying to "beg for all the mercy you can get." It makes it sound as though there is the chance that you won't receive forgiveness, as you must "beg" for it. It can then be inferred that the person is already in Hell or already dead, in which case they would beg and beg but receive no forgiveness, for their period of grace has passed.

That's what this song is to me.

And yes, I'm 15, so people out there who think that young naiive teenagers cannot think so deeply, think again :)

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
